new folders containing duplicated content appear on the NAS

I seem to have a whole bunch of new directories "automatically" created on my NAS with names like "D1DTPM~M" or "GYYO5P~L" (that is, automatically generated by the operating system, not myself) which i have no clue where the come from. These folders contain replicas of albums (so for example album "A" appears both under it's normal position in my MYSIC folder but also under one of those new "phony" directories. When i browse my collection from the NAIM app (a) those folders do not show up in the "folder" view and thus (b) album A will only show up once in the NAIM app. However,  they do seem to occupy physical space on the NAS when i query the total size of my collection from windows. Has anyone come across this before?

Hi DrPo,  what's the make/model NAS & what UPnP server

Can you send a Windows screen shot ......

It sounds like your NAS is making snapshots.

This allows you to access copies of the files at different dates, very useful if you need to go back to a certain generation of file.

It's normally configurable so you can exclude certain directories.  I have this enabled on my QNAP for business data and pictures for example but not for music.

............  ahh good thinking .....  if it is that, you don't want it for music.  The NAS would need to be configured to do this & so it can be disabled.     Once disabled I would then run a back up & then go in through Windows & delete the unwanted folders.    Not sure what else you need to do,   but whatever, do a back up first so if it does go pear shaped you have saved the music.

Normally when you disable snapshots the NAS cleans up so hopefully a manual cleanup won't be necessary

thanks all for your inputs. The NAS is not a very sophisticated one (Seagate NAS) and i don't think it has the options you mention about snapshots. In fact i noticed this during the backup process and i am now indeed contemplating deleting those directories. I noticed some of them disappeared when i asked to restart the server but not all, here is what my main directory looks like:

based on the advise i will delete now that i have taken the backup.

Oh err

I know its a personal preference,   but why file the different formats in different folders, I would find that hard to work with.  I have all my music in the one share, music is music.

I keep Lossy compressed in separate folder from FLAC separate from DSD.  And HDTracks downloads are separate from CD rips, etc.  Though once they are browsed in naim App they appear all together.

No idea to the OP's issue.

Yeah I know, its like a few buddies do it,  but I'm a tidy OCD

I'm all WAV or DSD & music is music.  I don't differentiate downloads or ID that it is a download,  but I keep a record of where I buy from ......  I buy from everywhere, US, Japan, Europe  ......

... and I thought it was my OCD which caused me to "file" my music in folders per download source :-)

well, with respect to the file convention, i find it still useful to distinguish the "resolution" because i occassionally transfer to iDevice or to USB sticks for the car etc... but cannot say a lot of thought has been put into the design... on the other hand i track the origin of where i purchase from:-)
