Ripping Classical CDs
Posted by: Robert Daoust on 29 February 2016
Hi, I'm using dbPoweramp to rip pop CDs, which has worked fine. But with classical and the Naim interface, I'm finding it challenging to set up a system where I can search not just composer and work, but conductors, soloists and orchestras. Any tips?
The Linn is also bad. Terrible search facility. That's why I have Audirvana of my Mac on stand-by for search duties.
Are you using MinimServer?
Thanks, both. Tell me more. And any thoughts about dbPoweramp and where to put what?
I think you need to tell us more, such as where you are storing your music and which upnp server you are using. The reason I mention Minim is that it can handle composer, conductor and so on. If the tags are not there you can just add them in DB Poweramp.
I have moved this thread over to the Streaming Audio room, which is perhaps more appropriate.
As for ripping classical discs and organising the metadata, it can be a real pain, but it's not impossible. It's very hands on and usually the default results from AMG, Gracenote, Freedb etc.. are either way off what I would like or need copious editing.
Thanks, all. Richard, thanks for pointing out the correct room. I'm never too sure where things should go here
Hi, I found this piece very helpful in how to organise: http://carstenknoch.com/2012/1...for-classical-music/
Forget about the word iTunes in the title, it is about setting up your tagging system.
It's definitely worth looking at MinimServer, also checking out their forum as there are several threads discussing ways to tag classical music. The developer is very responsive and open to ideas.
As mentioned above most of the online metadata needs a lot of work, so I tend only to set Album Artist and Album Name in DBPoweramp before ripping. I then use Yate or Metadatics to edit the tags to my own liking. If you're on a PC, I think Mp3tag is the one to use.
You can edit the tags after ripping with dbpoweramp as well.
Robert, if you are are interest in classical music, do yourself a favour and read the "Your music libary" and "Browsing your library" sections of the MinimServer documentation.
The MinimServer documentation might seem intimidating at a first glance. But it is exemplary and, even if you are not going to use MinimServer, very instructing.
Perhaps a disadvantage of MinimServer is that it is not open source. But it is extremely well maintained and, if you post a question on the MinimServer Forum, you will most likely get a ready feedback from the developer.
The limitations that you are mentioning are not intrinsic of the Naim interface. They are dictated by your UPnP server. If you use Minimserver, you will be able to browse your music collection according to the indexes you like.
I use MinimServer to browse my collection according to the following indexes: Album, Genre, Composer, Work, Conductor, Orchestra, Artists and Date. I use Ex Falso or lltag (from the command line) to tag my files.

Yes, true. I was using Yate with XLD before DBPoweramp was available for Macs, and got used to its advanced text editing feature.
