Have New NDS with older 555PS should I go for 555dr ?

Posted by: musicfan51 on 01 March 2016

I had an HDX nDAC/555 combo. I traded my nDAC in towards an NDS which I have had for 7 weeks! It sounds great! Using a 5 year old 555 power supply. Reading on the forum most of you think highly of a 555dr. Should I buy a new 555dr and sell or trade on my 555? Or is it worth it to keep the older 555ps and use both power supplies on the NDS. How significant an upgrade is the 555dr to the older 555? And is it a notable upgrade to use the 555 with the 555dr on the NDS? Or small enough that is might be better to sell it?  Opinions.

I have Kef Blade twos so the speakers are revealing but my electronics are not as revealing as yours Graham! It will probably come down to money. Might be too much to buy 555dr without selling my present 555. Just bought the NDS and that cost some $ too. But I sure would love to hear two PS on my NDS.

One of the strengths of the forum is that you'll get lots of feedback from a broad variety of well informed enthusiasts.

One of the weaknesses of the forum is that they won't always agree, so you'll be better informed but not necessarily any closer towards reaching a conclusion.

Good luck in deciding your forward path.

Thank you everyone for your replies! Lot's of good info in this thread!

I have been very pleased with the sound of the NDS/555 so far and hope to take it to another level soon!

Bottom line the sound difference in the 555dr from the older 555 power supply is a worthwhile upgrade and not a small one you strain to hear?  Everyone is pretty much in agreement over that statement, am I correct?

I agree with it

Yes.

Thank you! The Naim Dealer told me he heard more detail and resolution in the highs and the 555dr sounds a bit faster or quicker than the old 555. He presently does not ha e a burned in demo to try! He had sold it very recently! New one is due Wed. So he has nothing really to try that is sounding at it's best!

I have never bought a new piece of equipment which didn't require some sort of bedding in period. However, although my 555PS-DRs took a good six months to fully even out, most of the goodness was evident from the first time they were switched on. It is likely that you will be impressed from the off, then, just when you thought you music could not possibly sound and better, guess what....

That is good to know Harry!  I remember my 555 took awhile to come into it's own!  Thought Dr may take even longer!

Eight months here. But don't let that put you off because it sounds wonderful out of the box.

Do you think DR sounds better than an older 555 right out of the box or needs a few weeks running time to really sound better?

Posted on: 07 March 2016 by Harry

Out of the box. No problem.  Like some have said of the 500-DR, stilling calling it a 555PS is a bit misleading. I've heard it said of the Supercap-DR and 250-DR also.

A slightly odd question: which one is the analog vs digital ps output on the NDS?

Actually I think that is a very important question Jonas!

Socket 1 (right one from front looking) digital, socket 2 analog?

I noticed that my NDS sounds better than it did a few weeks ago. More detail, better stereo imagining and better flow. I take like the 555dr power supply the NDS gradually improves over a long period of time. I thought it was completely burned in after a month of play but it definitely  sounds better another 4 weeks later.

If I had to sell my older Naim 555 (it is 5 years old) to afford the new 555dr,  how much do think Icould ask for it on Audiogon? I paid $9000 back in 2010 and of course a new 555dr is $11,500 here in the USA. Do you think I could ask $4,000?  Any opinions on this?

Wouldn't it more cost-effective to get your 555PS DR'ed? At five years old you wouldn't even need to have it serviced.

Thought about that. But I wanted to get a new 555dr to go with my new NDS. Plus it would kill me just as my NDS streamer is sounding fantastic to ship the power supply off and not be with music for three weeks!

Assuming you are working with a dealer the dealer should be able to help you out for those three weeks.

It's never been mentioned by the dealer Bert.

Still talking to my dealer. First going to try new 555dr. Harry you said you thought it sounded better than older 555 out of the box. So I may find that out soon. May try out having two 555s  on the NDS a week or two later. Of course if I look at my Check balance maybe I shouldn't. And just trade it in.  Ha!

Another way of looking at it. If two PSs sound convincing you could keep an old one and DR it later.

Posted on: 15 March 2016 by musicfan51

Yes! I want to hear what the Dr by itself does first! Then try both and see if I want to put the money in it . I hope the Dr difference in the 555 is compelling.

We went to DR on the 555PS (got a really nice deal in part exchange for our old one) and adding a brand new unit gave a big improvement straight out of the box. About 2 months later, after the new 555PS-DR had settled down we borrowed our old PS from the dealer,. The addition of the second (non DR) 555PS was convincing and compelling immediately. We thought about buying our old 555PS back but opted for another new DR unit - but doing this was icing.

None of this of course, guarantees that your experiences will be the same. That's half the fun of it.

Harry how do think it took for your Naim NDS to be fully burned in?
