So who has an active system then?
Posted by: Graham Clarke on 03 March 2016
What with the (yet to be officially confirmed) news that Naim are to stop making the Ovator speakers, this means that customers now have no way to purchase an active system from new, which is a big shame. Many people who run active systems, myself included, wouldn't want to go back to passive.
This got me wondering how many people on the forum actually run active and what their set ups are?
So don't be shy, what's YOUR active set up?
Mine is NDS/555 into S1, Snaxo BMR/Supercap DR, 3x NAP300 DR into Ovator S600s.
My active system reads 252, HDX, Supercap dr, 555 dr power supply, 2 x250 dr, Hi cap dr, snaxo 242, Rega RP8 , stageline, into SBL's. Looking to demo some new cables but not sure what yet. Don't want non bendy NAC5 as I like cables under the carpet out of sight! Have I got it right TQ black or blue?

Be interesting to hear how that goes. I tried TQ Black with my IBL's and it didn't work at all. Went straight back to NACA5.
Hi Marksnaim
I'll let you know when I have demo'd the TQ black - can't afford the super Lumina though! That's the trouble with active - doubles up on the cable!
I have been active with Naim/Linn setup for over 25 years and worried about what to do with my ageing Linn Isobarik PMS speakers. I reviewed Ovator 600 active with NAP500's and hated the Ovators high end. Then reading an article on Vivid Audios speakers I researched and found excellent reviews of them and the fact they were designed by Lawrence Dickie. He was Chief Designer of active speakers at B&W in the 80's. He explained his new venture with Vivid Audio didn't include active speakers but, nevertheless invited me to his studio to listen to his speakers. Quite simply, they were fantastic sounding speakers, beautifully crafted. I was smitten by the Giya G2 and determined to have these active. Lawrence, wanted this too! We agreed a price and he had an active pair made whilst liaising with Roy George at Naim for a modified SNAXO 362. The Giya G2 is a 4-way speaker, so it was a challenge. When complete, the result was a system sounding better than I've heard anywhere. The system is now
552/NDS x 2 DRPS/3 x 500 DR
if you contact Lawrence Dickie at Vivid Audio, he would help I'm sure. Of course, Naim now have the design specs for the SNAXO 362 (Vivid Audio).
At the time I bought my speakers only Giya G1 & 2's were available. Nowadays, the new Giya G3 is out there to much critical acclaim , as is most of the Vivid Audio range.
hope this helps.

And S800 will also run Active with only two NAP500!
Get them while they are still being made.....DB.
I sit 3.5m away from the DBLs, which is pretty close, but it seems to work. I am not sure the S800s will be so forgiving!

Done Passive - will remain with above. Future upgrades will be to DR the set of 500 and to investigate streaming again - sometime.

CDS3+555PS+552+Supercap into BMR SNAXO+3xNAP300
and very satisfied of the setup, though it took quite long time to fine tune it.
A real pity that Naim stopped Ovator range production, especially considering that alternative is Focal...

Very Interesting, I guess this means Naim isn't abandoning the Active Systems.
Question, with the G2 being a four way speaker, how is the Snaxo being utilized with the 3 x 500 DR's?
Does a 4 way Speaker has 3 crossover pts?
On my Briks which is a 3 way Speaker,
Isobarik Specifications
Frequency response 20Hz – 20Khz
Efficiency 86dB for 1 Watt
Crossover points 375Hz and 3Khz
Power handling 100 Watts music
Active or passive Both
250.2 on the tweeter, above 3Khz
250.2 on the Mids, between 375Hz and 3Khz
250.2 on the Woofers, below 375Hz
How does that work with a four way Speaker?
BTW, the G3's ain't bad, the Siminar was hosted by the Esteem Manu, over @ Audio Plus.
David Machael Audio (Royal Oak MI, USA)
555PS DR x 2 / NDS / S1 Pre / S1 Mono Blocks
Full Loom / Powerlines / Vivid GTA 3
The Speakers appeared to do everything well, the Owner (David Michael), shared that these Speakers were Stereophile Speaker of the year 2014.

I sit exactly 3.5m from my S800. They work fine for me! ![]()

Very interesting.
Just about to try some SL (IC and SNAXO), then there is plenty of DRing, so I will possibly relying on the second hand market in future years. Let's hope others make the most of this opportunity to keep up supply!
Interesting decision by Naim ...
My current system:
NDS/PS, NAT01/Supercap, 52/Supercap, SNAXO/Supercap, 4x135s, Ovator 600
The Ovators replaced an active pair of SBLs a couple years ago.
Next purchase: record deck (I've had a Linn Sondek (Aro arm) and Roksan (SME arm if I recall) in the past).

Frequencies x-over for Giya range from G1 to G3 are @ 220, 880, 3500 hz while the smaller G4 is 250, 1000, 4000 hz.
It was really a surprise for me that Naim tailored a Snaxo specifically for them. Yesterday i had a conversation with the Italian distributor and friend but he was not aware of this.

Very Interesting, any information on how the Snaxo utilizes the 3 x 500 DR,s!
My Guess:
1 amp above 3.5Khz
1 amp between 220hz & 3.5Khz
1 amp below 220hz
In any event, good news, it indicates that Naim hasn't dropped the ball, as it relates to Active Systems!

Laurence Dickie: "I have always been a keen advocate of the active approach to loudspeaker design, believing that the direct connection between amplifier and voice coil offers the purest route and that the precision and linearity of active electronics give a clear advantage over passive alternatives. However for pragmatic reasons we felt it unwise to go to market with only active speakers. An important part of the design phase of the first Vivid Audio products was a re-evaluation of passive crossover design. It has to be said that the use of computer-aided circuit analysis has really changed the game. The accuracy possible to meet target responses while presenting a safe load is quite remarkable. This coupled with drivers which present constant impedances across a wide range of drive levels, non-polar film dielectric capacitors and air-cored inductors has permitted us to create passive designs which really challenge the active alternatives."
Garybeardieman, looked at the diagram layout of the G3's, just curious, could you elaborate on the Snaxo's set-up with your 3 x 500 DR's, as it relates to your 4-way G2's.
Nice to know, Focal/Naim is Active with Vivid Audio!

Hi again,
i should have explained more completely about my active Giya G2's
yes it is a true four way speak and I only have three amps with the SNAXO 362.
essentially, the engineer (Lawrence Dickie) settled on a cross over point with Roy George at Naim above which the two HF speakers would be controlled by the SNAXO and Naim built the SNAXO according to Lawrence's specs. Lawrence then built into the speakers a small passive crossover between the two HF units. This was built in when the speakers were built in the factory.
I'm not an engineer, so can't give you exact specs. I can tell you the results worked beautifully.
hope that helps a little.
Got it, snaxo 500 on lows, snaxo 500 on mids act as an true external cross over. Whilst, the remaining 500 is operating with a passive cross over built within the G2's for the two high frequency drivers.
Always nice to know how these ideas work.
Thanks!!!
Enjoy your Music!!!
