NDX and ND5 keep going to Input Initialising

Posted by: Kevin Richardson on 04 March 2016

Whenever I try to stream they keep dropping network connection.  I am stuck in an endless loop of "input Initialising."  Anybody else experience this?  Anybody have a solution?

It can't find your network;  I guess its something in the wireless section like the AE's or router.    I would first go to the standard IT "try this first" trick & power cycle everything.   Leave the router off for at least 5 mins so its ISP knows its off, then restart the route but, let it complete its start process before going to the next in line.     2nd question - is it all DHCP ??  if not it might be helpful if it is during this fix-um process.

I already tried all the basic troubleshooting steps.  I've ordered a new Airport Timecapsule router in hopes that is the cause.  (Set me back 430$ USD and it replaces one that is only 1.5 years old )

Is there a way to drop wireless & go to all ethernet,   at least with the heavy data traffic sections between server &  renderer.

I would look at a decent router such as an ASUS, but indeed if you can get the wireless out the way thats always a good thing.

I had the same problems on the NDX on Friday night with intermittent loss of connection, no app or remote control. It was constantly losing and finding the nework every seven seconds or so. This affected iradio and NAS sources.

I could see in setup the connection losing then initialising all the inputs.  Re-installing the app, switching NDX and Router on and off made no difference.

I left it running on mute and it sorted itself around 7:00pm.

Everything else on the network was working fine.

Kevin - do you still have the issue. That status screen tends to mean the device is bringing up the link and trying to acquire its IP address from the DHCP server .. in older firmware (and I thought it was fixed now but perhaps not) it could time out in my experience and hang on that screen  if timing of the DHCP process was such that so that it was not successful, or that layer 2 frames were lost. Perhaps this happened when the lease was being renewed. Is the NDX connected to the router on a wired connection?

Another possibility is that if the link to the router is interrupted or unreliable, and then the DHCP server might see that no one responds to the streamer IP  address when its probed by DHCP to see whether its in use.. and therefore is reassigned. Then two devices will have the same IP address and both devices should detect this ( should be quite easy to see) and request a new IP address/lease from the DHCP server - it might be the Naim code for doing this might need looking at. Again can only verify with a Wireshark trace - but its where I would look. Certainly I would let Naim support know

Would loss and a restart of the connection from the supplier (Virgin) potentially cause this Simon?

I noticed my Apple TV white light permanently on when I came in on Friday evening and was also experiencing the (wired) NDX problems.

The network should function, irrespective of wheter it receives the "internet" from the ISP or not.

I would suggest re-connecting all equipment, enabling DHCP and making sure all components are plugged into a switch.

Hi Graeme, as Adam said above the internet connect should have no bearing on this.

Simon-  well I've had the problem for a couple of weeks.  Every time I shut down everything and bring my modem /routers/ aps back online in the logical order and this would often fix the problem for between  5 minutes and several hours.  Yesterday everything started working as normal and it has been up for > 24 hours so maybe it is fixed?

My educated guess is that my router has become unreliable.  Of course after I spent the $ and received the replacement everything appears to be working.

Why is DHCP preferable?  I have always used static ip addresses for devices permanently connected to my network.

thanks for your help.

I wish that were a possibility.  Unfortunately given the size of my home the cost would run into 1000's of USD.  Also my wireless network has been so rock solid since I got my nd5 3 years ago I'd hate to invest in Ethernet when wifi now provides faster than 1Gbps.

Posted on: 06 March 2016 by Mike-B

OK  I understand,  if its been rock solid for 3 years,  not much to argue with.

But cost of 1000's, I question,  Cat5e is all you need or maybe better Cat6,  Bulk Belden Cat5e is less than $250 for 1000ft,  Cat6 is peanuts more.

I read 1Gbps on wireless devices but tend to be somewhat sceptical.  Bits per second is bandwidth - the size of the pipe - but how fast is the water flowing ?? thats latency.  Its a combination of latency & bandwidth that controls how quickly a file is transferred. Latency will always be higher on wireless . . .  ethernet will typically have a ping time of about 0.3ms,   wireless will be around 1ms up to 4ms at best.    Then the Naim renderer (all audio renderers) are 100BASE-T & work at 31MHz/100mbps,  thats as fast as the Naim unit will receive the data,  anything more is headroom (reserve)  & yes its nice to have.

Kevin, DHCP is preferable, and of course you can use to statically assign addresses using it, such that when and if you change your router and subnet, you are not left with challenges. Yes if your devices have an alternate way of configuring them not by the network, such as most professional devices, then you could manually assign. However in consumer land increasingly everything is controlled via the network so DHCP becomes fairly essential.

Now with regard to wifi, don't think that the radio sync speed is the actual throughput.. It's far from it. Wifi has a huge overhead to allow it to work with wifi devices on your network and neighbours all sharing the same radio spectrum and network bandwidth at the same time. Therefore 802.11g is really going to struggle with a 192/24 transmission at around 10 Mbps under ideal conditions. Typically throughput efficiency of these older protocols is going to be around 20 to 30 %. Now things did improve with 802.11n and significantly improved with 802.11ac where potential throughput efficiency significantly improved (60% +) for the same radio bandwidth . However at the moment Naim are only using the older, less efficient wifi protocols. (b/g).

Ok... Ok ...  I've located the problem.  I have the Netflix on iOS disables my Naim streamer problem.  The streamers always stop working as soon as somebody try's to watch Netflix on their iPhone or iPad.  What kind of witchcraft is this?  I've been going insane trying to figure out this problem....  This just makes no sense.......

I've seen this kind of issue a couple of times:

* software (torrent) on a device hogs the bandwidth to the point that other devices lose their network connection.

* a device (iPad) hogs the bandwidth to the point that other devices lose their network connection.

Depending on your router, you may be able to limit a device to a certain percentage of the bandwidth.

Simon

The cause of mine may have been a Netflix conflict now that I think of it.

Interesting.

There is another post running on exactly that problem

I don't have a Netflix account.. Living where I do there not much point... so I can't sniff the network to see but am  curious to see what mischief making they are doing with their app..
