NAC 282 + Hi-Cap + NAPSC

Posted by: endlessnessism on 05 March 2016

I have bought a second-hand year-old NAC 282 from a Naim dealer.  It was delivered during the week and all appeared to be in good order except that when I went to set up today I found that the link plug between the two top rear power sockets was missing.  (I'm sure it was just an oversight and I have emailed to ask for it).

I am trying to connect to a Hi-Cap as well as the NASPC.  I'm pretty sure I have made all the corrections correctly according to the manual but I am getting an error message (flashing mute button) that indicates a power problem.  The manual shows the link plug in place for this configuration so I'm guessing that's the problem but can someone please confirm this?  If it's not the problem I'll have to investigate other possibilities.

You're correct. With one HiCap PS you need the link plug in place as you point out. If you are using 2 HiCaps or SCap the link plug is removed.

See section 10.7.1 Power Supply Upgrade Options of the manual.

+1 for the link plug.

Once in place enjoy your excellent new Pre amp

Correct

withouth the link plug you can only run: 2 x HiCap or SuperCap

Thanks for the replies.

The second Hi-Cap option had not occurred to me.  As it happens, I have one that I am intending to use elsewhere in the house but for the time being I could keep it run-in on the NAC 282.

What would the connections be?  For now I have a Hi-Cap connected to the bottom-left of the four power sockets on the NAC 282, and then a cable from the Hi-Cap to a NAP 250.  What connections do I make for the second Hi-Cap?  I am guessing top-right on the NAC 282 (marked Upgrade 2) to the fourth (last) socket from the left on the Hi-Cap?

Best if you find a PDF on Naim's website called 'Connection Guide'.

It covers most common connections. I use it all the time when assembling or changing something. This way I don't have to remember it

This may help.

I was a little confused at first since your profile says you have a NAITXS.

However here's a link to the guide Adam mentioned.

To avoid lengthy explanations the connections for two HiCaps to a Nap 250 are on page 13.

By the way I found the second HiCap was better served powering the Stageline with the other powering the 282. 2 HiCaps on the 282 wasn't  much of an improvement. Powering the 282 with a SuperCap was a vast improvement.

Thanks again for the replies.  The connections are now clear (and as I expected, which must mean I have learned a thing or two).

My profile is not up-to-date.  The NAC 282 / NAP 250 combo is new.  The Nait XS will move on to other duties elsewhere in the house and in due course I will power it with Hi-Cap but that requires some re-organisation in the room in question. I also have a Nait 5i (non-italic) which is probably surplus to requirements.

I will try the two Hi-Caps on the NAC 282 and if nothing else it will keep the second one warm till I'm ready to use it on the Nait XS.

If I recall correctly you need to ensure both HC's are very close in vintage, amount of use etc.

I used 2 on an 82 many years ago...Not worth it from memory. SC much better.
