250DR Home demo with Supernait2 as pre .. its a keeper.

Posted by: pete T15 on 08 March 2016

Opportunity knocked a couple of weeks ago to home dem a brand new 250DR using my SN2 as pre . In many ways I believe in keeping an integrated amp just that but after a couple of positive reports I thought I'd give it a go . Even from cold its impact was immediate , all of a sudden everything became more alive and involving . The control the 250DR has over my PMC's is incredible with speed and almost total silence between notes .

The most important thing is that I've probably had the most enjoyable couple of weeks listening in years and nothing has hit me like this since my nait2 in 1989, which is a pretty good benchmark . I've always had a good idea of the meaning of lower noise floor , dynamics and detail etc. but everything has been recalibrated now  . Credit to Naim for creating such a stunning amplifier and thanks to all forum members who have posted so positively , its all true!

So for anyone thinking of supercharging their SN2 this is a very good 2 box option and shows what a great pre-amp there is in the SN2 . This certainly won't be the endgame for me but I can happily sit , toe-tap or dance around the room waiting to see what turns up in the meantime .

A very happy Peter.

Glad to hear you've had such a great experience. The 250 DR is an awesome amp. Maybe one day I'll hear one on the back of my SN.

Thanks , I'm sure it would suit the original Supernait too . Another thing I've noticed is that I seem to be listening at lower volumes than before which I'm sure pleases my neighbours .... I'm sure it'll be the cornerstone of my system for many years to come .

Damn, damn, damn, not the kind of thing I want to hear Peter!

Exactly what you "want" to hear . Only joking , nothing wrong with your SN2 but when the time comes its worth a try .

I tried a 250 (non DR) on my SN1 HC and it sounded great. I did an A/B test over a few days, swapping the SN out for a 272. The 272 won out  and so I sold my CDX2 and SN+HC to make room for 272/250DR combo. If I hadn't been in a position to sell my CDP to release funds I would have gone for the SN/250DR combo and would have been very happy until funds allowed purchase of the 272.

Ha definitely not what I wanted to hear either! Glad you're enjoying.

You any idea of where you're gonna go next?

Is it only 2 box or do you need a high cap to go with it? I recall you need the later.

He'll only need a Hicap if (when ) he swaps the SN2 for a preamp. The 250 can't power a pre, but the SN2 can power its own pre so he's OK for now.

As Chris says above I'll probably change the Pre Amp at some point but I think I can wait to see what may appear in the future . A Pre at 282/252 level with its own internal DR power supply would be very welcome but I'm not sure thats very likely ? An opportune 282 purchase can't be ruled out but I prefer 2 boxes .

One problem that has appeared is after re-arranging my set up and getting a new TV stand is that I can't put my Fraimlite where I really want to without buying new speaker cables . I have 3.5m TQ Blacks now and I need at least 4.5m . If I change I'd look at Super Lumina or TQ Ultra Black  which would be what my Dad describes as a bit of a 'Wallet Rattler' !

There's no rush though as I love my system as it is and I'm sure the 250DR is only just getting into gear . Not to repeat my self but it is a great 2 box option .

I would sell the sn2 and buy a 272

I tried a 272 with my 250dr and thought wow true hi end naim sound from just 2 boxes !

Yes that has certainly crossed my mind and adding an XPS etc. If I was starting from scratch then probably but I already have a very good DAC and apparently the 272 / SN2 pre's are very similar. Probably a bit too sideways for now so I'm gonna stick with what I've got .

Pete, out of interest when you use the SN2 this way, are the inputs to the amp section grounded, or is the amp disabled and powered down?

To be honest Simon I'm not sure ? The XLR-DIN from the 250 goes into the Bi-amp socket on the SN2 as per the manual . I can only assume that this connection disengages the power amp section of the SN2 ?

Peter.

Hi Peter. I don't think it does disengage the power amp on the SN2. I'm fairly sure the SN2 power amp is also on, hence bi amping with the 250.

Really keen to try it myself! I've been over to Wenger15s place and just heard his new 250DR. Stunning amp!

I'm really not sure but sure someone on here may be in the know? Whatever way it's configured to work it certainly works very well .

Peter, I'm not 100% sure because I'm biamping with the 250.2 and not the 250DR but your configuration could technically be bi-amping, like mine.

In my case, I've removed the jumper cables on the speaker terminals of my biwirable Spendor SP 100/R2 speakers, and am using the SN2 to drive the upper terminals and the 250.2 to drive the lower terminals. I'm using two 3.5m lengths of NAC A5 cables for this.
