Recommendation for the forum

Posted by: glevethan on 10 June 2011

Many "veteran" forum members have left while others (such as myself) are slowly starting to dip their feet back into the water.  Are all of the updates and fixes in place or are others still remaining to be implemented?

One component of the previous forum has not made its way back and I hope that it eventually will.  On the previous forum directly underneath a posters name the date they joined the forum as well as the number of posts which they have made always appeared.  Is this feature coming back? - I certainly hope so.  During my 8 years of forum membership I have seen many posts and I have always found a direct correlation between the "accuracy and validity" of advice given and the number of years one has been a forum member.  The reason for this is simple - the more years one has been around Naim components the more experience and wisdom one has accumulated.  Quite often we see advice given as "gospel" by members who have only been Naim users for a short period of time.  They speak about upgrades from 282's to 552's without ever owning either pre amp.  I know that when I read posts I place more value on those coming from long time members who have had actual experience owning the gear they are posting about rather than from those who have been members for 6 months yet feel qualified to comment on every component in Naim's product line.

I hope this feature will be returning as I feel it will be beneficial to all who participate in both giving and asking for advice.

Respectfully

Gregg

I think you would be better of demoing a 282 yourself rather than going by what someone on a forum has to say - regardless of their experience. Its a lot of money to spend on someone else's say so... which is probably the best advice anyone can give you.

1/ Ignore feature back please. It seems to me the wrong people have left.

2/ Mark a forum "as read" feature would be good, save a hell of a lot of back and forth marking post as read , especially after some time away.

3/ get rid of the avatars, WOS.

4/ get rid of that space.

I'm not holding my breath as  probably all hoopla have formed a committee  to work on the next Logo Improvement Plan as we speak. So not much room for the trivial stuff, eh?

Too bad indeed, a lot of wisdom has left the building in a short period. Others will take there place, although the use of the -not to be under estimated- search function still reveals much help/insight (were as the amp / cd / psu line-up hasn't changed a lot).
-- blanc line intended, perhaps due to the 'reply with quote' option? --
To contribute: My personal wish (besides the dreadful lay-out) is to support mobile phones again (HTC/Windows). Change is good, but since the new forum I can't post anymore (ie when travelling by train). Not very helpful for a forum. I'm a user.

How do you tell if someone has left?

I agree with you on this one Gregg.

I think you may find that a number of "old members" are still here, they just took the opportunity while it existed to "reinvent" themselves.

For all that, I'd like the "member since" feature back too.

Hi Richard

Thank you for the comment.  With that said is this something that we can expect - together with number of posts?

Gregg

I also think some/several are still having a occasional peek. Unfortunately the number of post/sharing is far less (without any blame to them). I have learned heaps on this forum, and I'm stil very grateful for all sharing (and don't forget humour). Hopefully it will just be a temporary dip. I find it inappropriate to mention names, but could easily make a list with some highly appreciated and not forgotten members.

When it would bring back some old geysers: +1 for the "wisdom" feature

Another great feature that's missing IMHO is the possibility to have the watched topics listed somewhere... I find interesting things around the forum, I subscribe to the topics but when the discussion ends you can't trackback it easily (I have to bookmark the single topics to my browser...)

Marco

Just noticing - why was this moved to the Padded Cell.  Me thinks this is of enough importance to be on the main HiFi forum.

statistical analysis with Googles "Forum Analytics " app can be very informative.

The average number of posts per member has decreased by 63.8% since the new format came into being, while the average number of people posting has decreased by 53% but suprisingly there are 23% new members however this could be due to name changes which the anayzer can't take account of.

 the Top 3  Posters who have left the forum are;

  1. much
  2. ROFT
  3. Berlin Fritz

"Berlin Fritz has left??"

Nooooo!
init.

1. "Left" before the software change

2. Tried to blow up Parlliament and is currently strapped to a chair being played No Jacket Required on repeat, but (bravely) still finds time to post. Thankfully.

3. Was an attention-seeking special needs poster

The Exodus (as such) is nothing compared to 2004, when uber-moderation (in my opinion) ripped the guts out of the Forum, which until then had been the best place on the net bar none, and its openness and life gave Naim nothing but great credit.

No Berlin Fritz?

No Vuk ?

No Mick P?

No Tarquin?

No Paul Rosen?

No A, B, C, D...............

Even PB has more or less melted away.

But with these new-fangled "avatars" and new "names" each and every one could be stood right beside us and we wouldn't know....................

Time for ANOTHER FORUM BBQ perhaps ?  which (reminds me, where is Munch?)

Cheers

IIRC Munch was "banned" from the forum a couple of months ago...

This place is haunted by more ghosts than you might think, or perhaps some who left had clones made of themselves before going. Even some who were banned at one time or another have made their apparitions tap keyboards here.

I must say one of my gripes about the old forum was the lack of avatars, I like them, and regularly update them, here and wherever I have them.

Gregg (and others), To add to Richard's earlier post... if you click on the little man next to his new user name, you'll see that munch has posted nearly 300 times since he rejoined in April.

I thought Munch had reappeared as Gale 401.   I may be wrong, but this new Stu bears a striking resemblance to the old Stu.

ROTF is now Guido Fawkes, a.k.a. Guy.

Don't know about the others, but I think Vuk posts on PFM now.

Will be interesting to see if this thread gets mod'ed.   I mentioned "Munch" a couple of months ago, and my post was instantly deleted.

Spooky,

But I am typing this at 16:15.

The Forum Summary sheet states that the last poster on this thread is Gale 401.

When I enter the thread, the last poster is actually Hook. Hook has suggested that Gale 401 is Stu.

A quick "search" fails to find any posts related to Gale 401

Has Hoopla "f**c*d up" big time and do these aspects of the forum need fixing?. Or is there some serious moderation at work today..............spooky.

Cheers

Hook,

I have now re-read a few of Gale 401's posts.

I don't think Gale 401 and Munch could be one and the same.

If gale 410 isn't Munch then it can only be a deliberate and rather curiously motivated hoax.

Guys,

I am still about now and again.

I am a classic speaker now.

Stu

You english and style of writing have significantly improved - clasic writer!

What's happening to your posts - or is it a glitch with this new forum?

Your post in this thread (11:55) doesn't register in the Padded cell summary, even at 17:22. Its still showing David's post as the last entry.!

Yet two other threads (in the HiFi Corner) show you as the most recent poster - yet your posts don't apprear in the actual threads !!

Cheers
