lost post

i posted a long description of my experience and some initial problems with the UnitiServeSSD around 0200hrs or so today, but the post seems to have gone astray? i seems like there may have been a problem perhaps after 2300hrs?

Sorry about that, ken,c! I hope you find your post. I am curious what you had written. For longer posts, it's always safer to write it on a notepad or word document before copy/pasting on the board.

yes, you are right, i should have thought about entering txt outside the forum first and simply copy/paste. i guess i didn't think of it as i have never had to worry about this sort of thing.
its a long time since i installed the NAS drive and this was quite straight fwd. the unitiserve was actually delivered 10 days ago, but i hadnt had time to install it -- any spare time i had i found myself spending it doing some gardening -- which i found very enjoyable.
but last night i decided to go for it. routing the network cable took some drilling here and there as the router is in the adjacent room.
for some reason, when i tried to browse to the static IP address that i allocated for ReadyNAS drive, i was getting a very worrying certificate failure from either IE or Firefox.
The other problem was that the UnitiServe wasnt found on the network when browsing to its name NSSRVxxxx. After spending a lot of time messing about -- including re-setting my router to factory settings -- and then re-configuring it, i could browse to the NAS and after a while, the NSSRV became "visible" under network devices -- still couldn't browse to it, but this didnt seem to matter because when i opened the dtc and set up all this share/store stuff, i manage to rip a CD and the process seemed surprisingly straight fwd and psychologically quite fast.
The problem now is that i don't have a power supply for my nDAC -- so i havent played the rips yet. i could share the 555PS on the CD player, but this is quite awkward and will disturb the delicate cable dressing at the back of the rack. So i will probably initially just play sans power supply. i dont even have space for the power supply anyway. anyone using their nDAC this way?
the other "issue" i guess is that the Serve is plugged into the same ring as all the other stuff in my office -- this was the simplest thing to do again without disturbing the cable dressing.
well, i hope this post is not lost again -- i typed it straight in again. i never learn :-(

ken,
You don't need a power supply to use the nDAC. It has its own powersupply built in. The external power supply is only an upgrade. I don't think you could "share" your 555PS. Its two outputs are only for use with 555CD. For other devices, you can use only one output. If your CD player is CDX2 or lower and has dig out, it makes more sense to connect the PS to nDAC and connect the CD player to to nDAC as well.
The initial problems with UServe is normal. You should give it time to "settle down"; it' needs time to detect everything. The best way to use the browser interface is to find the IP address under properties of the device in 'Network' and copy/paste it to the address bar of the browser.
I really understand why you do some gardening when you find some spare time! Don't neglect that. It is really a wonderful thing.

sorry, "sharing" was a bit misleading. what i meant was connecting it to the nDAC when i am NOT using the CD555, since i cant listen to both at the same time anyhow :-) . Prior to this set up, i had a CDX2.2/nDAC/555PS, so i know that the 555PS is a significant upgrade to the nDAC, but i cant afford another ps, and even if i could, i have no rack space for it right now and i would struggle to fit another fraim in my office.
thanks for the "settling down" advice -- i think that is what won the day eventually -- i sort of expected everything to be detected quite quickly, like the ReadyNAS when i first installed it -- but i think the probably spurious security problem with its static IP address may have contributed to the initial confusion. it took me a few panics before re-setting the router, but this did it in the end and all seemed to work OK after that. i should have thought about accessing the Serve by IP address -- very good tip!!
re: gardening -- i sort of stumbled into it, and then i got more and more interested as i discovered more and more plants that my wife planted -- now i am sort of hooked. interestingly the other day, i totted up the amount of money i had spent on gardening to-date -- plants, compost, this and that, etc -- and it came to £330 -- initially i was sort of shocked -- then i realized the that was a bit silly -- funny how i could easily justify a powerline! -- thanks for the encouragement.
i will let you know what it all sounds like -- i have ripped quite a few CDs now. painless procedure - initially i only wanted to rip a few for 'test' -- but i have done quite a few now

Try simply navigating in your browser to the ip address of the serve

yes, good suggestion as i said in the reply to aysil -- not quite sure why i didn't think of this -- i blame stupidity.
i notice that the serve creates .wav files -- i assume you can also create other types?

No, daily switching connections to the PS is really no practical, and re-warm-up periods would be necessary for optimum sq. I had not read your set-up. If you have the CD555, I can guess you will remain on that for any serious listening and use the convenience of the rips for preparing playlists for guests and for your 'gardening sessions' etc. I am still curious what you will think when you compare CD555 with UServe/nDAC/555PS.
Enjoy your system and your garden!

No, as far as I know, UServe creates only wav files. It can convert other files to wav, but not the opposite. If you need to convert to lossy formats for mobile device etc, this should be done elsewhere.

yes you are probably right, though i dont know whether the brief power cycle will make that much difference. i am also curious if i ever manage to power the nDAC with the CDP555's power supply, but as i say this is quite difficult without disturbing the delicate cable dressing.
playlists for gardening sessions? sounds like a good idea to me !
