ASSET NAS Server in da house

Posted by: DQ on 16 June 2011

Just plugged in a brand new ASSET NAS. Set up was as easy as can be. Total commander at work on copying music over from the much messier WD MyBook. It is headed to retirement as a back up version.

So far n-stream running much faster....getting closer to iTunes type speed.

So, a vote for illustrate and thanks to those here who pointed me in a good direction.

Cheers

Very nice.......what are you streaming to?

Not in the market for a new NAS but definitely like the look and reports around Asset. Please let us know how the streaming goes.

Jack,

Streaming to the NDX - flawless startup and flawless streaming.

I am wondering if I have the router and switch in the right order or if it matters. At the moment the order is cable modem, wireless router and then switch off the router. Both the NDX and the Asset NAS are off the switch. Is there an argument for having the switch upstream of the router? n

Also switched over to using PS Audios eLyric for track selection. It does crash every once in a while, but nice to have the ability to do play lists on the fly.

Cheers

DQ, good to hear. Unfortunately I have suddenly started with  problems with Asset with album art, I have got to about  150 CDs loaded, and Asset has problems delivering all the album art images, it stalls and crashes and then Asset seems to reset itself after a period. If I reduce album art image size it goes longer before crashing, but can't get it totally reliable any more
Seriously starting to think about a Serve.....

Simon,

That is odd. I have 15000 tracks loaded and have had zero issues with Asset either with a PC pointed at a server or using the Asset NAS. Worth asking Spoon what is happening. He is very responsive.

Do you have any point of view on the switch/router order question? You seem pretty informed on network matters.

Best, David

David

Sounds like you have the network bits in the right order. The wireless router is probably also your firewall between you and the Internet - you don't want the switch upstream of the firewall.

Simon,

Disappointing to hear about our issues with Asset - like you I do wonder if a Naim server based solution would be much less hassle
Posted on: 18 June 2011 by Simon-in-Suffolk
DQ, it might not be Asset related after all but it might actually be iPad related!!!!
I have updated iPad firmware and touch wood no problems so far!!!

As far as your question goes, it really depends what else is on your LAN. Having a local switch between your Naim and NAS has advantages as all the regular media network frames (carrying Unicast packets) will only go via the switch and not flood back into your router,  which keeps any loading or potential loading performance issues away from your router. For hidef audio definitely worth doing. I connect my Naim to my NAS via two connected non blocking switches.

David, what are you using as the control point with Asset? Is it an iPad?
I have just had the error again. Off to ask mr spoon as you say..

If Asset were to crash, then you would have a crash report on the computer on which it is running, and you would have to restart it to have it run again, but it does not sound like this is happening. It sounds like the control point is having difficulties in reading from Asset, perhaps wireless is the potential issue. As a first test try a control point which is a) On a PC and b) on wired connection, you should see fast browsing and cover art for all your tracks (there are various ones you can try KinskyDesktop, or Asset Control).

Hi Simon

I have very similar issues with Asset Control point whether I run Asset UPnP on a separate PC or on the same Netbook as the CP; or point it directly at the NAS UPnP server. The CP crashes and locks up the Netbook using 100% of CPU power usually after 3 – 6 tracks. I have also tried Kinsky DT with similar results, although the guys over at Linn are attempting to get it to work for me. I am NOT a programmer nor do I understand the logs but to my untrained eye the Qute appears not to be reacting as expected to the CP. This is only my interpretation and I may be wrong, its very nice of the guys at Linn to even bother though I think.

I have not found a CP that works with the Qute that I would like to use, i.e. a graphical interface that would be easy for my wife and friends to use.

I have found a kind of text based CP that does seem to function well, but its not easy to browse albums will just album names, much easier with artwork.

Have not seen a Serve to know if the computer interface is usable, none local to me, and not able to travel at the moment, will be interested to hear how you get on.

Peter

EDIT: Damn this forum software. Visitors called whilst writing reply to Simon and Mr Spoon posted, why can’t we refresh before posting without loosing our post?

Just to note I am all wired; wireless is not an option. Your Logs are un-fathomable to a mere mortal Mr Spoon.

Simon,

I am using two ipad aps (n-stream and eLyric). N-stream works perfectly but as we all know is missing some thing. eLyric generally works fine but can lock up every now and then.

From the PC I use Asset Control and that also works just fine.

Not sure any of this is much help.

Cheers

Have noticed that N-Stream is usable with a fast server like Asset or Vortexbox. eLyric looks like something worth trying just for the playlists but I've got quite fond of Naim's little CP which has certainly surprised me. Are any of you using Asset to transcode flac to wav? Might be worth doing a comparison of the same track in wav and flac. AssetNAS are good value in comparison to RIpNAS. I was going to use a HFX M12 as my VB server but the exchange rate made the cost of importing one from Vienna exorbitant. Tog

Tog, ok I have powered up eLyric as the server, and it's great package, I love the way it handles compilations like from Mojo magazine, it automatically downloads art for each track on the fly and provides info on each artist. It's very fast and so far no crashes. It also reads the ID3 tags in the wave files with no problem at all. Very impressed.. Thanks for the tip

Fixed it... Schoolboy error. I forgot I had disabled multicast floods/discovery packets  on my wireless to improve performance.... Doghhhh .. Got that re enabled, everything stable again..... Including Asset...
Listening to some 24bit Dave Brubeck with a pint of Adnams as reward. :-)

Yup, that was the next thing I was about to suggest you check......

Congrats on getting it working!

I am still getting crashes on elyric, especially if I scroll down too fast. After that the only thing I can do is to power down and back up the ipad.  It is a much prettier ap and when it does not stop working when minimized it will be even better.

I also like Asset Control from the PC, very fast and stable. No way to save playlists on the fly that I can see.

AssetNAS is rock steady after a week of running. When I loaded up a vast quantity of music, it took a little while to chew through it, now that is done it is running very smoothly.

Hi DQ, yes I have found eLyric a bit unstable. It sometimes refuses to start on my iPad. However agree with Assett - rock solid and versatile and works very well ith N-Stream.

Have you discovered how to make the custome search containers yet. Absolutely fantastic - really easy to sift through hundreds of CDs to get to what you want.

Also agree if you tell it to clear the database and rebuild (perhaps you have been pruning or editing some files) it does take a little while to index thousands of tracks.

My issue with eLyric is that when the controller is not active it refuses to move onto the next track - unlike N-Stream. So if on iPad and switch to surfing or reading the ePaper then the music stops at the nd of the played track. No good for me so I gave up on it.

Yes haven't found a way of of making playlists on the fly with Asset

Simon,

I have not discovered Custom Containers...what are they?

Also, anyone know how to create playlists with Asset? Can it do M3U?

i have created M3U playlists which work well via Logitech Transporter, i have pointed Asset to the same place (playlists)  NDX will play some playlists and not others....strange??

David, open the admin screen for Asset under the WHS console, click on the edit button, and then on the left you will see the browse tree. You can edit and adjust the tree into different search 'containers' to suit your needs. These options or containers are then shown by n-stream or whatever control software you are using at the top level.
Hope that helps.

Here's a link to images of the Desktop Client for the UnitiServe I posted awhile ago on flickr.

Hello Develyn

Thanks for posting the link again. It is not clear to me though how albums are selected from the screenshots, i.e. will one of the available choices show a screen of all album covers that can be browsed similar to Asset CP or Kinsky DT?

This is what I really need to ensure that my family and friends will use it. They don’t really appreciate being confronted by a long list of album titles in text only format; in fact neither do I.

Regards

Peter

Don't get me wrong I love cover art as much as the next magical woodland mammal but I don't really have a huge issue with choosing from a text list of artists on n-stream. The covers arrive with album and I have an entire program (the excellent Bliss) devoted to managing them. Since they are as much a legacy feature as book covers on ebooks it is interesting that we still consider our digital music in physical terms. In the end it is software. Tog

Hi Tog

Perhaps not a huge issue in its self, but the much-preferred option for us is selection by cover art. Many of our friends only know a particular album they have enjoyed by the cover.

The fact is of course that this should be perfectly possible, others are reporting success, but having tried with 3 separate computers they all hang when running the CP.

I must make it absolutely clear that the Qute works perfectly when operated by the supplied remote control. But, I like many who wish to use a wireless solution would enjoy a much-improved experience if I could run a CP on a computer.

Hi DQ,

Did you purchase the AssetNAS from Ripcaster? - only I have tried ringing them a number of times without success.  Also wondered how quiet it is in operation and can you access the hard drives to replace them if one fails?

Thanks.

Dave

Dave,

I did buy from ripcaster. I got hold of Anna and we did most of it by email exchange. I found them pretty good to deal with.

In terms of noise, it is pretty quiet but not silent. A little noisier perhaps than WorldBook it replaced. The disk bays are very easy to access for replacement. No big deal at all there.

Cheers, David
