Lp12 revelation

Posted by: Pawson6844 on 13 March 2016

A friend of mine mentioned to me the other week that lp12's don't like to be sat on a wooden shelf. I have an old target wall shelf with the wooden shelf.

Decided today to have a change around, I've taken my CD player and flatcap off my fraim and replaced with my phone stage and put the lp12 on top shelf.

Why have I wasted my lp12 on the old wall shelf! Fraim has brought the lp12 to life. It sound like a different turntable.

Seems such a bigger sound, the soundstage has transformed, clarity of instruments has gone through the roof. Just to top it off the the bass is the biggest leap. Amazing, more of it but in a good way, cleaner, faster and deeper.

Wow, i think it will be stopping where it is.

Krystal, Radikal, Akito and Kore arriving end of March too. Good times

Now to discover all my vinyl again.

When i still had the LP12 i had better results on a custom design wallbracket with target light wooden shelf. Sounded much more lively than on top shelf Fraimlite. But clarity was indeed very fine on the Fraimlite but overall a bit slowish and fatter.

My LP12 sits on a perspex shelf on a wall bracket which seems to work well so never experimented with placing it on Fraim.

enjoy your upgrades, I found the Radikal was a good step up from super line

In my experience the sound quality of an LP12 with a standard base plate is really improved by putting on a Fraim.  I have since had the deck upgrade by adding a Urika which comes with a Trampolin base.  Which appears to negate placement issues completely. . .

I first bought an LP12 when 23,  now more than twice that age and having worked through turntables from Townsend, Michell and Clearaudio I bought a new LP12 last year.   In MHO the combination of an LP12 front end and naim amplification is unsurpassed musical enjoyment.  My wife even buying vinyl again :-)

Seconded, with approval from the gods.

I made some tests with placing LP12 (with Trampolin / Urika / Radikal) on various "thingies".

It's most happy when sitting on my library shelf, with Radikal placed on a glass support shelf. Powered by a standard Linn cable that came in a box.

When I write happy, I mean - the sound is most relaxed and flowing at a good pace.

Double checked my wall shelf last night, perfectly level and shelf itself sat perfect on four spikes.

Popped it back over just to check it wasn't me, sounds flat and slow. The Mrs came in noticed the difference before I mentioned anything.

I don't know if it's the fraim glass and balls that improves it over trying an lp12 on a fraim lite but to us top shelf fraim is its new home

My LP12/Akito is presently sitting atop my Fraim with a borrowed Krystal. Now that is one fine cartridge.

That's interesting Gary I was thinking of a Krystal.  How would describe its character and by comparison what cartridge do you normally use?

Posted on: 14 March 2016 by gary yeowell

I have owned many over the years. The best is still an Asak ''T' from the days when Supex made them, an Linn modded them. The Krystal reminds me of the musc first, hifi last approach of old Linn. It's better than any Dynavector i've owned and that includes DV17, DV20XL by a huge margin, and better (more musical) than a DV Te Kaitora Rua i had. I'd say that it just builds on the strengths of the LP12, as opposed to change the character like other non Linn cartridges seem to.

Thanks.  I'm currently using a DV20XL.  I agree with you entirely that the upgrade goal has always to build on the strengths of the LP12, rather than change it into something else.  With that in mind I'll be speaking to my dealer about a Krystal cartridge. . .

Depends on the flooring you have too; my Fraim is on a wooden floor on Chips and I found the LP12 on it could be affected by movement/walking nearby. On a Quadraspire wall-shelf it was better, but then added a Fraim glass level/3 ball bearings/cups on the wooden platform and it's better again (did the same for the CD555).

My Krystal has ousted my old Lyra Kleos - the Krystal just works beautifully; but don't tell anyone

Anyone know how much a Naim glass shelf, bearings and cups cost?

TOM TOM - bearing cups - not sure on glass.

The glass is £187.42 incl VAT.

For the LP12 cup and ball mod, you could try 10mm toughened glass from a local supplier if you wish.

Three cups, three balls are about £40.00 from memory.

Also worth using the two sticky plastic rings for the glass (ball retainer kit) as used with the Fraim. In this way you LP12 is less likely to go walkies!

Oh, BTW it works!

I tend to limit the Lycra to cycling

Ken - the Krystal has won me over, I'm not sure if I would bother with any cartridge between the Krystal and a Kandid - much better to go for a Klimax Radikal

Ken - the Krystal is a bit special. I am still a big fan of the Lyra Kleos

Stereoplay have reviewed the Krystal cartridge and it's been awarded the publication’s top ratings for both sound and value for money.

“… extremely lively, thrilling and offering super-fast performance... [Krystal] is a value-for-money monster of the very highest order. This cartridge is a treat and a no-brainer!”

Those of us in the Krystal Klub already knew that

Had a call of my dealer today, expect my Krystal in beginning of next week. Can't wait
