NAC282 or NAP250DR

So the consensus is SL  speaker cable should come after upgrading to 282 + 250DR.  Now my problem is a financial constraint.  I am only allowing myself a certain amount of $ for luxury goods/ year.  In the context of my current system would upgrading to a slightly used 282 while retaining the SN2 as power amp provide significant SQ gains?  This option makes better fiscal sense given 250DR will likely show up on secondary market in another year.  Should I just wait a couple of years and switch out the SN2 for a 282 + 250 in a single step?

I think the 250DR with the SN2 would make more sense than the 282. But as you say, the 250DR is a new model so you won't see much knocked off them exdem.

If you can wait a couple of years, it might be best to go for a secondhand (sorry pre loved) 282 and 250DR in one hit and and by then you should be able to pick up a 250DR at a more advantageous price.

The only question is, can you wait two years?

I've gone SN2 to 282 HCDR 200 as a stepping stone to 250 DR in a few months. The 282 HCDR is a great foundation ime.

How about the 282 now paired with second-hand 250.2 and DR it later on?

I take it you have a HiCap already?

I've read that the SN2 sounds similar  to 282 + 200.  What kinds of sq improvements have you noticed?  Is it a massive upgrade?

Hi Kevin , I was in a similar predicament recently with funds to spare . In the end after a home dem I bought the 250DR to add to my SN2 as not only did it sound great it was also pretty much future proof . I may add a 'bargain' 282 if one becomes available but not a new one as I can't help but think that Naim Pre's are due a 'statement' refresh .

You need to listen for yourself...but yes to my ears with a 2015 282 & 2013 200.

Kevin - you actually don't need SuperLumina cables to get the best out of your system.
They certainly help, but Pound / Dollar / Euro vs improvement ratio is not the most pleasant one NACA5 is a very good cable.

282 is a good pre-amp. The thing is, it needs external power supplies to function really well.

If your aim to end up with pre-power set up, than get a decent NAP 250DR now.
At a later stage you can decide if you want 282 or N272.

Thanks for the input.  I already have a HICAP DR so that helps.  I am definitely not going for a 272.  I think my plan is to find a used 282 and then trade in my SN2 + V1 for a new 250DR from the local dealer.

A sensible route.

282 sounds very well with a HiCap. Opinions are divided as to which PS is better for the 282 - HiCap or a SuperCap.

Several people have reported strong preference for 2 Hicaps with the 282.

Adam, Kevin

Opinions not divided in this house. I've run my 282 with 1 Hicap, then with 2 Hicaps, then with a Supercap. Each step was better for sure but Supercap was by far the biggest step. Not even close. A 282/Supercap is very nice indeed as well it should at the price.

Indeed that is what I run
