Speakers choice for 282/SCDR/250DR
Posted by: Adam Zielinski on 14 March 2016
Hi guys.
Trying to come up with a short-list of decent speakers for my living room (40 sqm).
System: 282/SCDR/250DR. Sources: NDX / Sondek LP12.
Cables: HiLine Din-Din, SuperLumina speaker cable, PowerLines.
In order to get the speakers past the Government Approval they must come in Piano Black.
Budget: GBP 12,000 / EUR 15,000 (thereabout).
Any suggestions?

Yeah - how is that beer coming along? Did they have enough at Waitrose? £12k does buy a lot of Newcastle Brown...

XPS DR and 555PSDR have arrived yesterday. Both are demo versions, so I expect them to be run-in.
XPS went first. Will be running it for the best part of the week, before I swap to 555PS.
First conclusions? The usual borring more of everything, refinded, blah, blah, bla, etc etc etc. In other words: I bloody love it!
Very interested in how your dem goes between xps dr and 555 ps ? I'm considering the very same options. Keep the updates coming and in the meantime enjoy the music...and beer! and fish....
Couldn't resist... Put the 555DR on tonight. What a mistake! Now I have to figure out, which kidney do I like less...
The upside is that I have another two weeks of testing. So I can use it. Then they will probably let me keep it untill the new one arrives (the demo version is a sikly 500 series finish, and I need a standard one). So with a bit of luck I have few more weeks before I have to pay....
Wish you hadn't told us about the 555DR. Bet you never thought the GX300s could ever sound so good. I am gonna have to get one of those bad boys myself but I could really do with both my kidneys at my age. Problem is both kids have already left home so can't sell them either.
What am I going to do?
I wish I never plugged it in....
It is rather special.

There you go, a true Monkfish fan in the making. All you need now to go with the 555 is a NDS and keep hold of your GX300s to become a fully-fledged member of the Naim Monkfish Appreciation Society. As I am the President, it falls upon me to recruit others. I'm going to try and recruit Strat and Innocent Bystander and have them defect from the Mullet Appreciation Society but I think I have got my work cut out! ![]()
I'm no doctor....but I've always been under the impression you only actually need one kidney.....

You don't happen to work for Naim by any chance?

Unfortunately not.....but would suggest if Adam is going to sell a kidney, then get the remaining one upgraded to the dr version first.....
You seem a bit of an expert Wenger and I also really, really need a 555DR man. Cost new is £6235. What do kidneys fetch these days (one owner but been round the block a few times)?

Probably best to say, ' kidney , used once only '....will swap for 555 dr.......worth a try....lol
I'm 58 so I don't think anyone will believe I have only used one of my kidneys once, but I appreciate the suggestion. Getting desperate now!
I know, Adam I happen to be in Poland when you have to return your 555DR to the dealer. I would be more than happy to take it back to the dealer for you and I promise I will make sure it gets there...Ahem....
What do you think?
Anyone know how much an Easyjet return is to Warsaw?

One problem - the dealer is only 10 min walk from where I live. And he knows where I live (that's two problems actually...). So you will have a tough time explaining why it took you a month to walk that half a mile ![]()
If you're in Warsaw - just let me know. Will be a pleasure to meet up.
I know! 555PS is heavy - so you had to make frequent stops ![]()

Damn, getting really desperate now!
I am now tempted to do another horrible thing.... Canibalise my other system (from the music room), take the nDAC and plug it into the test set up, powering it with 555PS..... Luckily I've ran out of rack space...
Does it make any sense to get the 555 for my n272 one day? Na zdrowie!
Cześć Olek - that really depends on where you want to take your system to.
If I was not planning on upgrading from NDX to NDS, I would have most likely settled for XPS. It is that good.
But knowing that I will upgrade, buying 555PS now makes more sense.
So if N272 is your end system - you will be more than happy with XPS DR.
One observation on XPS vs 555PS with my system in my room.
XPS seemed to unballance the system (sound wise). It was especially audible in the lower mid range - bass lines that I know well, were suddently disjointed. It also gave my NDX a bit of a harsh edge in the upper highs (around 3-4 kHZ range, where the attack for bass and snare drum typically resides).
555PS brought it back together, but of course making it sound miles better than a bare NDX.
I am a nephrologist (kidney Doctor)- u can live a normal life with a single kidney. So go ahead- there are many people with end stage renal disease who really want a new kidney!

That certainly puts most of our so-called 'problems' in perspective.
My son has just got into med school and I am the proudest dad in the world. I love the thought that he will some day save lives. Am starting to well up now so will sign off.

A short update on running 555PS with my NDX.
I actually had to reposition the speakers. There was so much bass, it was starting to sound undefinded (still withing the 'constraints of my MA GX300) .
Moved them approximately 10 cm / 2.5 inches further away from the wall behind them. Things are starting to sound very civilised now....
Two more steps to go... NDS and new speakers. This will take a lot of time ![]()
10 cm would approximate to 4 inches! Please do state what you meant ...

NDX to 282 is a HiLine. Power cables are all PowerLine (well a there are only 3). SuperCap to NAP 250 - Chord Signature Tuned Aray.
Distance between current speakers rear port to the wall - approximately 50 cm now (I'll skip the imperial measurements to avoid any further confusion).
