Narcom 4 died in my hands !

Posted by: rjstaines on 17 March 2016

Has anyone experienced a Narcom 4 remote handset going AWOL, ...as in falling off the perch, ...as in croaking, ...as in stopped working completely ?

And, yes, I've changed the batteries to a known good pair.  There just 'aint no infra red light emmitting from it at all.

And, no... I don't own a dog, and I've checked for cat's teeth marks... there are none,  and the grandkids haven't been around for a while.  So all obvious causes have been investigated.  Anyone else had this happen, or got any good ideas?

Thanks,  Roger

Infortunately good timing Roger. Get a NARCOM 5 - It's even cheaper than the 4.

R.I.P. Narcom 4

Very odd.

Have you tried taking the batteries out,  holding down a button on the remote for 20-30 seconds, release the button, reinstall batteries.

It's worked for me in the past. No tried on a Naim remote though

Any ideal when did Naim introduce the Narcom 5?

Tried it, it didn't like it Finkfan, but thanks for the suggestion.

Mine goes AWOL at times, then just as I think I need to contact my dealer and replace it, it will start working again.  Kind of annoying except when it starts working again, because then I am just glad I don't have to fork out for another.

(Have you insured that it is selected for the correct input device?  I've f***ed that up a couple of times.)

It was reported in the dedicated thread I opened last week that the COM5 was introduced in December.

Narcom 4 died in my hands !

Roger,

Amidst the speculation, I hope you'll give the Narcom 4 a proper burial if indeed it is the end what with RoHS compliance and all.

Do Naim take them back for recycling?

Finkfan,

You may have stumbled upon the narcissistic audiophile's ultimate rationalization for a pilgrimage to Salisbury; to recycle a dead remote. I like it! May as well do a factory tour while you're tossing the Narcom 4 in the bin

I was kinda hoping Naim take them back for repair !

Roger, is it still within warranty? If so, and if it died of its own accord, it should likely be replaced FOC.

When the i series used to ship with the little i-com, there were a number of instances where the unit would just stop working for whatever reason. The i-com was not a very good remote.  Naim would replace them as a matter of course.  The "Stealth" remote (otherwise known as the Narcom 4) was a much better control and extremely reliable by all accounts.  I reckon you may have been unlucky.

I guess it would come down to cost. Maybe Naim could do a discount on a new one when you send them your old one?

Yes, they will take them back for update to NARCOM5. Please contact your Naim Audio retailer for registering.
