anybody experienced with on the end of a 250.2 in a smaller room?

Strictly speaking, no. But I had Katans for 13 years on the end of a Chrome Bumper 250 in a smaller room in two different locations, and it was a very happy combination. When I decided it was time to move on from the Katans I considered the 109s, but I found them to be merely an incremental improvement, and so went for something else. IMO, the two are sufficiently similar as to be interchangeable in terms of compatibility, room suitability, general speaker preferences, etc.

Based on that, I would say that if you liked both the 250.2 and the 109 on their own merits, and if you have a decent preamp and source, it's very likely you'll get on well with them together, especially in a smaller room. But even with that, a home audition is a must.

Hope that helps,

Colm

I am currently home demoing a range of small speakers to be fed by my 272/250 (LP12/Cdx2 as source) as I too currently have a very small room (3.5 x 2.5m). My old speakers are Linn Kan's.

First up were KEF LS50's. Great VFM, surprisingly solid bass, but for me ultimately lacked detail.

Then came the 109's. Again a really good speaker, which on performance terms had the edge over the Kef's, but as Corry suggests, they were an "incremental improvement" over the Kan's. I have not discounted them yet.

Next week I have three sets of Neat's to enjoy, namely the Petite Sx, the small floorstander Motive Sx2 and the isobaric Momentum Sx3i, which will probably result in moving the hi- fi to another room!

If it helps, and if you're open to other close-to-the-wall stand mounters, I eventually settled on a pair of ATC SCM7s. They seem to have all the virtues of both Kans and Katans, but they manage to be at least as expressive as the Kans - maybe more so - and less fatiguing than the Katans (which were never a fatiguing speaker to begin with). I suspect I'm not yet getting the best out of them - they're a perfect fit for the Katan stands dimensionally, but maybe not sonically - and I have a pair of custom built Something Solid XF stands arriving in a couple of weeks. After I've got those up and running, I'll post a detailed review. My runner up speakers were the venerable Harbeth P3 ESRs. In some ways better than the ATCs - more detail, more insight - only let down by my perception that they were somewhat polite in their presentation.

Perhaps i could have been a bit more detailed in respect of the Majik's in conjunction with the 250DR. Will they drive them? Of course they do and very nicely into the bargain. Compared to my old Kan's, they sounded more dynamic and more accurate especially in the mid-range and top end. They were placed close to a rear wall and handled that and the fact that they were on Kan stands which were a bit small with no apparent difficulty. As I said before,I have not discounted them in my search for a small room speaker. I definitely formed the opinion that they were a better long term choice than the Kef LS50's.

obviously there are other speakers out there, either better or different and certainly more expensive and some may feel that the 109's are a bit of a waste on the end of a 272/250 combo, but in the right room I suggest the old age pairing of Naim with Linn works extremely well and is fully capable of delivering a lot of aural pleasure in most musical formats ( full on large orchestral/ opera perhaps less so but still good enough for me as that is not a critical format with me).

Many people say something similar with Naim and Neat combinations as I hope to discover next week.
