upgrading unitilite

Posted by: oey on 18 March 2016

Hello to everyone.

I am a new and satisfied owner of a UL. I am thinking of upgrading it with an addition of a NAP 200. I have 2 very specific and interrelated questions and I will very much appreciate some help.

1. will there be any significant difference in sound quality?

2. if yes, will it be significant enough to justify the "investment"?

My speakers are Harbeth P3ESR and my room is about 30m2. And I do not want to trade in my UL for something else.

Thank you in advance to anyone who gets into the trouble to enlighten me.

A new 200DR would certainly give you a significant improvement, but you would get nearly all of that with a used non-DR version for a lot less cash. An alternative would be to upgrade to a Uniti or, if you don't need a CD player, a Superuniti, but a 200 is certainly a much better power amp than in any of these.

If, as you say, you are a new and satisfied owner of a UnitiLite, it seems odd that you immediately want to upgrade it. Surely it would have been more sensible to buy a SuperUniti in the first place.

That said, the only way to tell whether adding a 200 is worthwhile is yo try it in your own room. One person's 'massive upgrade' is often another's 'miniscule difference'.

I wanted the cd player. But putting aside any money considerations, according to your opinion, as subjective (though appreciated) as it might be, adding a NAP 200 is a massive upgrade or a miniscule difference (very nice quote btw)?

Ok then. It will be a very big upgrade, especially in terms of giving a lot more power to drive the speakers in your large room.

I really appreciate the clarity of your answer. For "audio amateurs" like myself, clarity and simplicity are very sought after qualities. Thanks.
