New Synology DSM

Posted by: Mike-B on 24 March 2016

Synology have just released the all new DSM 6.0-7321 & my system ran an auto update at 06:00 this morning.  It took a while longer to install than the running updates.    It dos not look like anything has changed w.r.t. Media Server, functionality such as transcoding & hibernation  .......... that needs to be checked (I'm all WAV so don't transcode).  I have not looked at Minimserver yet.   Visually everything else looks much the same as before , a few icon art changes.  The big changes are the visual stuff, security, Cloud & 64-bit

Been running the beta and most recently the RC (release candidate). The pre RC has problem displaying album art which has been fixed.

I am now facing (on the RC) issues with upnp stopping when I move contents (rename, retag, move) of its indexed music folders and my workaround is to reboot the hardware. (You may also stop and start the media server),

Will check out the full release soon.

The iPad UPnP screen reaction/delay time is so much faster.    Not sure if its DSM-6 or the new iOS beta I'm testing

I'm now pretty sure its the new Synology DSM-6;  unlike the previous DSM-5   it wakes from hibernation faster,  communicates with the iPad almost instantly,  plus the communication is made before the HDD's have fully spun up & the LED's are all on & running.   On the PC screen it opens almost instantly & shows the System Health widget but the actual health report does not show in the widget until the HDD's have spun up.

DSM-6 has not fixed the old hibernation problem.  It wakes up for all sorts of reasons other than when its supposed to,  it seems to be related to Win-10 as it was OK with Win-8.

I've reverted back to the old DSM-5 solution;  disable Windows File Service,  so I've disabled it   .......  Control Panel > File Services > Windows File Service --- Un-check Enable Windows File Service box.  ........  This prevents you viewing & opening the NAS album files from Windows Explorer;  i.e. you can't get access to upload new files from your laptop/PC or edit metadata etc..    I don't find this a problem as its just a few clicks to re-check the WFS box & get to the file view & the only time I need this is for uploading a new album(s)

I've nailed a report on Synology Support

RE: DSM6 & Java Updates, Reinstalled Minimserver Won't Run

With this NAS (and all ARMv7 models), you should install Oracle Java by using the Update button within the Java8 package. if you don't do this, MinimServer will run 5 times slower than it should. Sad This is because the Synology Java8 package installs OpenJDK by default.

The next MinimServer update will check for this Java mismatch and report an error.

Java 8 or Java 7? When I updated to DSM 6 yesterday, the process automatically prompted to to install  a Java 7 update. MinimServer appears to be running normally......

Thoughts?

I was a bit dismayed after my NAS updated itself to DSM 6.0 last night to find that minimserver wasn't running, and apparently couldn't be started.  The following fixed it, all seems back to normal.

Went to NAS administration page via web browser>package centre>all>Java 8 and installed it.  Then updated it.  Instructions as to which java package to download pop up as you go along.

Went to minimserver website and downloaded latest minimserver package for ARMv7 (which is the kind of processor my DS215j apparently has).

Back to Synology admin page>package centre>settings and changed Trust Level to 'all' (to allow installation of package downloaded from minimserver, as opposed to Synology).

Still in Synology package centre, click on all>minimserver>manual install.  Browse to the package downloaded from minimserver site.

Took a while to install the update and start up again, but subsequent trial of 'rescan' via minimwatch took a normal length of time, so I take it that the java update went ok, and it's running at the proper speed.  Seems to have retained transcoding settings, etc.

Went back to package centre settings and changed Trust Level back to default (Synology only) just in case.

Touch wood...  All seems ok now.

Minimserver has disappeared from my pre-installed 3rd party packages since DSM-6.   I had shut it down as I was no longer using it,  but its not in the package centre,  I don't think I uninstalled it but might have,  but 'er ain't thar no more

Plex has gone missing as well,  I've never touched that so it might be Syn have removed some 3rd party stuff.  I will go search & see if what going on .........

Posted on: 25 March 2016 by Mike-B

It seems that Synology DSM-6 with 64 bit has compatibility issues with some 3rd party packages & have chosen to not include them.   Maybe thinking about the support resources needed when they need all hands on deck to support their own new software.

Simoncn @ Minimserver ........   a manual update to the latest release   .........

MinimServer 0.8.3.4 for Synology
This is a minor update release for MinimServer 0.8.3. It was released on 22nd January 2016.
Add x64 version for compatibility with DSM 6.0 beta 2

I knew I would find the necessary info here to get Minimserver up and running again!  Thanks Mike and Dave for sharing your findings.  I woke up to the DSM update having being applied to my DS215J this morning and neither Synology's Media Server or Minimserver would work!

After a little fettling, I have downloaded 0.8.3.4 (ARMv7 version) for the DS215J, then needed to adjust the settings in Package centre settings to allow it to install (have also since changed the settings straight back after installation!), then once installed, I was up and running again.

Wouldn't have had a clue where to start without the info given above, so a big thanks for your posts guys :-)

DSM-6 Gapless Transcoding - FLAC to WAV

Well its clear they have not done anything with gapless transcoding.   I copied & converted DSOTM as I know that album well & is better for me to listen for any subtle issues.  No need to bother,  its so obviously wrong its unpleasant & much as I remember it when I tried it 2 years ago;  it stops playing before the end of each track & restarts on the new track start.

Posted on: 03 April 2016 by Mike-B

Synology DSD-6 installed & set to running some programs you don't need for music replay.  These are Hyper Back Up, Hyper Back Up Vault, PHP 5.6,  Text Editor & Storage Analyser.    I really don't know why they have done this,  I suspect its a left over from the DSM-6 beta test package.  (IF) You don't need them & I advise you go to your Synology webpage > Package Center > Installed -  & un-install them,  this will remove them & whatever background resources they have running & puts them back in the Package Center store.

I'm also looking at hibernation (again) as DSM-6 has added a few more wake up's than before,  I'll post more info as & when ....

Is the PHP package not required for anything, perhaps for the DSM-GUI itself? So does your DSM login still work without the PHP package?

If PHP is not required, what about the perl package?

Copy of earlier post moved to this post at request of Mike-B for continuity purposes:

Just had a quick play through with LSO playing Britten's The Turn of the Screw. Only used first five tracks to get a feel.

Synology - No discernible gap between any tracks, certainly nothing near 2 secs. Appeared seamless although I did hear a slight click between 3 to 4, may be the recording.

Minim - Again no discernible gaps. Click between 3 and 4 less obvious, but only by smallest of margins, may even be imagination. I did notice that Minim displayed track lengths were 1 second less than those displayed by Synology.

I'll try a couple more albums over the weekend including other genres

Posted on: 03 April 2016 by DWO-Naim

As mentioned earlier I've tried a couple more albums comparing Synology Music Server with Minim.

My findings are that Synology does not appear to insert gaps between tracks and the gap, if any, is very small but when comparing the transition of one track to another Synology appears to click/stutter just a fraction (pretty small really). With Minim the transition of one track to the other is much smoother. That being the case and noting that I am certainly not an expert in this I would say that if transcoding on the fly and "gapless" playback are key parameters then Minim is the better of the two.

All thats needed for music replay is Media Server (or Minimserver)  & if you use it Audio Station.   PHP & Perl are developer tools - & why I suspect they are left (overlooked) as an installed & set to running part of the DSM6 beta package.

The DSM-6 update did bring in a lot of new stuff & installed Hyper Back Up, Hyper Back Up Vault, PHP 5.6,  Text Editor & Storage Analyser & all where set to running - you don't need them for simple music replay & they are better un-installed (that leaves then parked in the package store)

I have been through everything & I think I've got it down to minimum wake ups.  Unfortunately Synology does not seem able to completely hibernate when not in use & does spin up a few times a day,  Media Server (DMA/DLNA) performs background tasks so you need to accept 3 or 5 times as normal.  If your NAS is just for simple music replay you have a good chance.  I have Media Server only running & just a few enabled program items.  I'm happy to post what I have if anyone is interested.       But if you do have other programs running such as Download Station, Windows Media Player, Logitech Media Server, Mail Station, Network Sharing, Surveillance, Webalizer & some 3rd party software, you will probably never get hibernation.   Other programs like Audio Station (Airplay) Cloud Station, Media Indexing, Media Server Log for Diagnosis & QuickConnect  will all add wake up events.

But remember hibernation does not save much more than a few watts, the pro/con of saving HDD life is "debatable".   Hibernation stops the HDD's spinning so it probably does extend mechanical life,  on the other hand HDD's tend to fail on startup.  Then add to the argument that a complete power up from off puts everything through a far more extended startup stress period than the soft start up from hibernation.    .............

DSM 6.0-7321 update 2 & update 3 have followed in quick succession.  Nothing significant other than DSM-6 bug fixes.    ..............

PS:  You might find the new Hyper Backup no longer shows in Main Menu even though you have it installed & "running";  turn it from running to off & back to running ........... its back on Main Menu

I have no issues with this software version either. It seems to be very solid. After a ton of back and forth (and I still run both) I have determined I prefer the Synology Media Server to Minum as well. The most recent ASUS router upgrade however was a disaster and I had to downgrade, I kept losing both the 272 and QB randomly in the IOS app.

If anythin, DSM6 and media server has been more stable for me so far. With DSM5 the media server would stop transcoding apple lossless files from time to time, requiring a restart of the media server (sometimes restarting the Synology).

Synology have just released a new Media Server Version: 1.5-2764 to fix the gapless transcoding problem  -  ITS FIXED !!!  - or maybe best say its fixed it on my system ............  I'm playing my usual test album Pink Floyd DSOTM,  FLAC compression 5 & its faultless.

Can other forum'ites check this out please

DSOTM flac > wav is not playing gapless for me on that new version of Media Server.  I'm not sure if there is a setting I'm missing, or a tag for the files, but it (Immersion Box version; studio album) is giving me gaps between tracks.

It does play gapless on Asset server however.

Hey Bart,  I read your post earlier & was a bit surprised,  I've just put the garden tools away & got round to trying mine again,  &  f-f- !!!!    its not playing gapless  -  Gdi !!!!  I was afraid this might happen,

Mine is a rip of DSOTM (30th Anniversary Edition) Hybrid SACD/CD - the rip is the CD layer.     Going back to my post  02/04/16 @ 18:47.   I copied my WAV file & converted it to FLAC (5)   & that first test was bad & no way close to gapless.    But as soon as I saw the new rev Media Server I tested it & found its was perfect,  I played it all through last night & followed that with some opera test tracks.  Now its back to ugly gaps again.    BTW my transcode settings have all the formats variants FLAC ALAC OGG AIFF all checked.

Oh well,  such is life.  But com'on Synology,  extract the f-f-finger - meanwhile  I will stick with WAV.

Posted on: 30 April 2016 by Bart

Hi Mike, I have no idea what's going wrong, but I think I did the best test -- the same files play gapless w Asset server and don't with Synology Media server   Sorry

Posted on: 30 April 2016 by hungryhalibut

It's because Synology Media Server is rubbish.
