Naim Dac Firmware V4.11.8 Update Problem, All Lights Permanently On
Posted by: ianmacd on 26 March 2016
Hi
I need some urgent help please.
I have followed the Naim Firmware Update instructions to the letter including checking the USB stick worked by successfully playing a WAV file. I then deleted the WAV and copied the five firmware files over.
When I inserted the USB stick into the Dac, all five lights illuminated as they should.
Unfortunately, after two hours, they are all still lit and I'm now totally confused as to what I do next.
Please could anyone offer some advice? I dare not take the USB stick out or turn off the DAC. I'm stuck ![]()
Any advice would be really appreciated, thank you
Ian
It is a long time since I did the update but I do remember taking the USB key out and doing a reboot. I think you have little to loose.
Thanks Paul. I removed the stick, rebooted the DAC, I'm afraid the DAC is frozen. All five lights are now permanently illuminated regardless of whether the USB stick is inserted or not. Pressing any of the five buttons is ineffective and I can no longer play music.
Is there a way to Factory Reset the Dac? I'm getting a little desperate.....
Any advice would be really appreciated, thank you
Ian
I am not sure. If the link plug is removed and you reboot do the two front led lights flash?
Just tried removing the link plug and no, the LED lights do not blink. Just all five button lights permanently on. Unable to hear music from USB inputs or any other inputs. Very annoying that a simple firmware update has rendered the DAC unusable....
Regrettably, I think the DAC is going to have to go for repair - unless there are any possible work-arounds....

Thank you Jan-Erik. I have just followed your procedure, the lights did blink several times, then stayed permanently illuminated, I then inserted the USB stick.
Nothing seems to be happening but I'll be patient and leave it alone for an hour or so and report back.
Kind regards, Ian
I suspect the firmware on the DAC has become corrupted. Maybe get another USB stick download the firmware again and try to reload. However this maybe a long shot as if the firmware on the DAC is faulty it may not be able to down the new version.
Sorry for the bad news. Unfortunate this has happened on a long weekend.
Maybe Doug or Richard will come on line and can help with magic way to install the firmware?
Thanks Paul, I think you are absolutely right. The DAC is very unhappy about something.....
I did change the USB stick when I started Jan-Eriks procedure, for now all five lights are lit and there's no sign of activity.
I appreciate your help and suggestions, have a good Easter, regards, Ian
Which USB port are you using ? Try the forced update and then insert the USB stick in the port on the back of the nDAC.
If that doesn't do it, try the forced update again, with the USB stick inserted.
Thanks Jan-Erik, tried all your combinations of ideas and used 4 different USB sticks, no luck.
It's now a repair job unfortunately. 5 hours of Easter holiday wasted on the thing..!
Regards, Ian
Oh well. My only advice now is to go record shopping. Manchester has some good stores if I recall...
Too right!
Have you completely powered down the nDAC. Switch off the power with the rear switch and any additional power supplies i.e. 555PS. and wait a couple of minutes. You have to load the files from the root directory of the USB stick.
I had problems loading the files when I updated. I realised the files weren't in the root directory. Putting them there cured the problem.
When copying the files to the USB stick make sure they are in the root directory of the USB stick..
Before trying to upgrade check what version of firmware you have by following the instructions that come with the zip file.
Thanks Graham, all good advice.
I have tried all of your suggestions, different USB sticks, the DAC just refuses to move forward and read them... As I mentioned in my earlier post, I even copied a WAV file to make sure the DAC would play from that particular stick. Then I deleted the WAV, reformatted the USB to FAT 32 and copied over the firmware files.
Regards, Ian

I did what you have done and was able to play a WAV file, but couldn't load the update files until I put them in the root directory of the stick. Are you sure they are in the root directory. Do you have the download instruction file that came with them. Have you managed to unfreeze the nDAC?

Instructions followed to the letter, as confirmed above, including root location for firmware files.
Naim DAC frozen. Will take it to a dealer on Tuesday. All options have been tried, I am now out of time and to be honest, enthusiasm, after almost a full Easter holiday day used up.
Sorry to hear that Ian. Hope you can get it resolved.
Thanks Graham.
