Sub woofer to go with N-sats
Posted by: Pev on 03 April 2016
Having downsized to Naim N-Sats I am in need of a sub-woofer - although the N-Sats have surprisingly good bass for their size they don't really get to grips with dub reggae and Phil Lesh's more subterranean bass excursions.
Ideally I would like an N-Sub but they don't come up very often and the only one I can find is stupidly over priced. I have been offered a Velodyne DD12 at a very good price and am rather tempted. This has got me wondering whether anyone is using N-Sats with a non Naim sub or has any experience of the Velodyne. It has very good reviews but there is no chance of a listen before I buy. Are the qualitative differences between subs that significant above a certain level? The system is only used for music - not movies.
Any advice or experiences welcome.
Hi Pev, I've run a pair of nSubs and a pair of Velodyne DD15s. The latter were awesome with movies, and have the advantage of onboard room correction, but they weren't so good with music. Being a ported design they tended to be too slow to integrate with my then SL2s. nSubs were far better in this respect.
In my opinion you need a sealed box subwoofer. Have a look at the BK offerings, they're very well engineered and remarkably cheap (there's no middle man).
Hi Pev
I have pair n sats. Great speakers but can't trawl all the info downstairs which you really need for reggae. I bought a Rel t7i connected using high level option to rear of speakers. Sounds great.
Per, i agree with Tonym that a sealed subwoofer is to be preferred. I know nothing about the Velodyne, but (assuming it is sealed) you may be able try it at a good price, then sell it on if not pleased.
I set up a pair of nSats for a friend, and built a 12" sub using driver and servo amp from Rhythmic audio. The nSats were driven directly from his Nait5i, and the sub, agains back wall, just off center between speakers, was set for 12 dB/oct low-pass at 60 Hz. The resulting bass was fairly seamless with the on-wall response of the nSats. Listen to a lot of different music and gradually dial in the sub response. You know you have things right when you discover you are listening to the music and have forgotten about the sub.
Cheers,
Charlie
Hi I use pmc 20.21 with DD10+ the velodyne seems really quick and agile .... with a deep dry base. ..cabinet is not ported. Use this with 272 and 250.2 brilliant integration. The plain DD series does not have servo correction but it is still awesome the DD12 should be great....
I have a JF subwoofer on my main system, and recommend the brand. Mine does not have a remote control, and that's something I'd like. Different material can require slightly different settings, and it would be nice to make those changes from the couch.

For some reason I always thought my DD15s had two front-facing ports but I stand corrected. In my defense, it was a fair while ago & my memory's getting a bit creaky. Nevertheless, I still didn't find they integrated as well as the nSubs, lagging too much behind the music in comparison with the nSubs. This may be because the SL2s were active, which makes them very agile. Anyway, sealed box is definitely the way to go.
I have a velodyne 1000 land it blends nicely with the ovator s400 . It adds a different dimension rather than throbbing bass- if I switch it off I really feel as if there's something missing!
I'd hold out for an n-Sub. It was designed with the n-Sats and as a package they are as close to seamless with music as a sub/sat system can get. Go for a different sub, and you'll always be have that nagging suspicion that it's not quite right or as good as it could be. Be patient, it'll be worth it.
Hi Tonym. ... I can't imagine how powerful your system must be!!!!! My single DD10+ is amazing .... As far as integration goes with the setup software the results for me are amazing. As far as musicality is concerned the small Velodyne is super agile never lags behind pmc. I think the most important thing is to have a speaker that does not fight at low frequencis with sub. So the next sat would work great....just dial in the sub. Mine integrates so well you would not know it's on ... until you switch it off. Only on tracks with gratuitous base say 20hz does it become more apparatus. ...but then you can with the remote back it off.
Next should read n ...doh!!! darn auto correct!!!!!
Argh aparatus arghhhh! apparant...... I give in! I hate samsung

Hi Richieroo, I've a very large room so need big speakers! I guess the DD10+ is more responsive than the DD15s - Velodynes are certainly excellent subwoofers and the built-in room correction is a great help when integrating with main stereo speakers. Whilst I still believe the nSub's a better bet, for the reasons Richard has given, they are as rare as hen's teeth so I don't wish to dismiss the DDs as a suitable option.
Wow you must have an awesome setup!!! ................ you need to try this track by Tyga 'Rack city' ..... and play it real loud this will test your 20hz!!!! Try it and let me know.......it is explosive...
There is an unused one on the bay at the moment that looks very good.

This would be my recommendation, too. I have had my eye out for 10 years!
Lord give me patience, and let me have it now.
In the meantime, we have upgraded from the Nait 5i to the NaitXS with the FlatcapXS. We have also repositioned our speakers next to the wall. The problem is solved at our house. One day, I will try the nSat on the 500. Bet the bass is there, too.
Thanks for all the good advice - unfortunately I'm still dithering. The one on Ebay is well over double the price asked for the Velodyne and in my view about £400 over a fair price for an N-Sub. Being allegedly "as new" is pretty much irrelevant for a sub that will be hidden from sight! It's not that I can't afford it, it's a reluctance to pay over the odds on principle - not always rational as I am one of those who will drive miles to fill up at a marginally cheaper petrol station
.
With you on that one Pev.
One can usually come to a suitable arrangement.
+1 for an N-sub, I have 2, one cherry - which is paired with N-sats, and one maple which was paired with Allaes...currently resting.....(they were more or less the last N-subs sold)..
A very good match IMHO, worth getting one..excellent sub, blends in very well..
Have a good Monday
