Muso: Hooking up/ethernet question

Posted by: GregU on 04 April 2016

I have always been confused by the ethernet cable issue.   Here is my question:  I have a muso.  I does drop out a lot...has for 2 years.  So I am thinking....My router (Apple AExtreme) is close to muso.  Currently I connect a mac mini wirelessly to router and also wireless connection from mini to Muso.  All are situated close together.  Would adding an ethernet cable be better?  If so from router to Muso?  Or to AE?

Cable always trumps wireless. If you can manage it. Router (or switch connected to router) to MuSo.

Definitely use a cable. It's a "no-brainer" as they say. The mini to muso wifi connection will actually be going via the router.

So you need to connect the mini and the muso to the router with cables and disable the wifi on the muso. It should be rock solid then, as it's an Apple router.

Hi Gregu, as the others have both said wired ethernet is usually advantageous where you can do it. So assuming your Mac Mini is acting as some sort of media server(?) then wiring that to a switch port on your Apple Extreme along with your Muso wired to another switch port on you Apple Extreme should provide the best network performance.

I've have a similar problem with audio drop outs with internet radio and it doesn't matter whether it is wi-fi or ethernet connected to the router. But it happens periodically, it can go for weeks without a drop out and then one week it can drop out 4 or 5 times on one song. This makes it unlistenable,... very strange.

Is the network set to DHCP?

Posted on: 05 April 2016 by GregU

Adam......Mmmm

What does that mean?

DHCP = Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

Basically it means that your router (the one that starts your local home network) assigns IP addresses (plus other network related information) automatically (as opposed to fixed IP addresses). Any new network device gets this assigned as it is connected to the network.

One of the common reasons we have observed for problematic streaming is an incorrectly implemented network configuration.  DHCP vs fixed IP is just one point, though.

Super your issue  will be almost certainly down to the network latency of your internet access, route across the Internet from your ISP to the web radio station as well as the web radio station server itself. This latency interacts with the TCP flow control of the TCP/IP stack in the streamer. Latency is not directly related to Internet access bandwidth. However Naim are developing improvements here to reduce the impact of latency on the streamers which we will hopefully see in future firmware.

Thanks for that Simon, i have had it on this evening and it's been perfect, but tomorrow who knows. The other things that come off the same router are i-pads, phones, laptop, android box, blu-ray players, computer and a Apple Mac and there is not a problem here.

Yes I agree with Gregu above. Yesterday morning I noticed Classic Fm was dropping out regularly circa 9 to 10 am. Really annoying. Tried it on the classic fm app on iPad and no such problem. To day it's perfect but like as said its like bad weather, one can not control or predict when it will occur. Shame really as the Muso's whilst excellent are not cheap pieces of kit.

I think one must look at one's network set up first, before blaming playback hardware.

My network is rock solid, as is my internet connection but i still get drop outs, so i am beginning to think this is a firmware issue.

I do believe there is a thread about conflicts with Netflix when someone is using that at the same time.

My troubles started around the last app update, and i have had the default 'its your network" response, however the support crew where trying!

Interestingly, my Muso's drop out on occasion when connected via ethernet, but when i use WIFI it is much better.

Tidal streaming is a well known problem - there was a summary from Naim on that problem earlier on this week.
