naim supernait2 for turntables
Posted by: kinderspiele on 05 April 2016
New to audiophile, used low end marantz for quite long time. recently, thinking of an upgrade. then made an order on supernait2. After that just found out supernait 2 can not be directly connected to a turntable, it requires a phono stage. so I have couple questions need your help.
1. if i purchase a naim stageline, do i need extra psu for it? if so, it will go beyond my budget.
2. if i use other brand phono stage, i want to confirm i can directly connect the phone stage to supernait 2 aux1, and no need for any extra things.
3. as i don't have any plan to further invest in psu for supernait2 or stageline..., is supernait 2 really a good choice for me. as I leart from internet, its biggest advantage of sn2 is the discrete regulator power technology.
btw, i am using a pro-ject carbon debut turntable, and cm6 speaker.
Thank you very much.
Hi, my answers as follows:
1. Yes you can use a Stageline directly with a Supernait 2, it connects to the 'aux 2' socket with the supplied 5 pin 'snaic' cable and works very well this way.
2. Yes you can use a 3rd party phono stage with the Supernait 2, it plugs into the standard line level inputs (Din or RCA) so you'll need an analogue interconnect that's all.
3. Supernait 2 is great on its own without additional psu's - as to whether it's a good choice for you no-one can answer that except you after listening to it. You don't mention room size, music taste, etc. and I'm not familiar with your speakers - all of which will factor into the equation and you really need to listen with the help of a dealer. At face value with your turntable the SN2 seems like overkill and the (much cheaper) nait xs (or less) should do it justice. Do you have other sources?
1) No, the Supernait 2 has a powered AUX2 socket to take the Stageline so you don't need a separate PSU to make it work. The Stageline comes with the SNAIC5 you'll need to connect the two together - bonus!
2) You'll need a suitable interconnect.
3) Only you can judge just how suitable a choice is the SN2. However, it's made plenty of friends on here and elsewhere so even at worst I doubt you'll be going far wrong, and at best you'll probably be over the moon.

At least we're consistent..!
Re point 3: don't worry - you WILL add power supplies
it's inevitable, so no need to fight it... ![]()
A point on the turntable - I think you will quickly find out that your Peoject needs to be updated. SuperNait 2 is a very, very good and revealing amp. Enjoy it!
I had an SN1 for a number of years, with a Gyrodec TT running via a black cube phono stage into the tuner input (just because that suited me) - it sounded great.
As above, the SN2 is a brilliant revealing amp and I suspect that you will need to upgrade your turntable to make the most out of it.
thank you for all of your guys. very very helpful.

Fully agree. I've run my SN2 for two years without a PSU and find no lacking or wanting to upgrade, and I've run PSUs on former systems.

No doubt that Naim PSUs alter the SQ of the system. Many call it a no brainer upgrade, I'm less resolute. Whether the net effect is overall positive or negative can really only be determined by long term listening to a variety of source material both with and without the PSU. Less can be more.
I have been using a Supernait2 with a Rega phono stage from my Ariston RD40/ADC ALT1/Goldring Eroica for a while now and I must say it is rather good!
No need for anything else apart from the cable between the stage and the SN2.
Enjoy the music and take no notice of those who say you need a lower spec amp - at the end of the day it's your ears and enjoyment that matter!

I haven't - I've owned a bunch of Naim amps in the past 30 years (!!) and the SN2 is the first one I haven't felt the need to 'upgrade'. Must be the DR effect.![]()
Actually, thinking about it, the first was the 42/SNAPS/110 in 1986 and immediately preferred that without the SNAPS. Which was nice.
I saw no need for a PSU n my SN2 either, until I tried one for a couple of weeks and couldn't bring myself to give it back! It's a great amp all by itself but it's better again with a hicap dr added to it

I had exactly the same experience with my XS-2. I am now saving for a Supernait 2 to go along with my Hicap DR :-)
The Pro-Ject Debut Carbon is not that bad anyway, just put an ortofon 2M blue on it, pair it with the Stageline on the AUX2 and enjoy!
I used to run LP12 with Uniti and Stageline, while having a new cartridge fitted had a listen to Hicap DR powering the Stageline... oh dear not nice, even the dealer said it's killed all the boogie. So the result was purchasing a SN2 and like many others have said forgetting about PSU.
I'm sure you will enjoy the amp and your current deck, you can always upgrade that later if the bug bites as the SN2 can form the basis of a very enjoyable minimal system.
Thanks for all replies. Make me much more confident with my order on SN2.
SN2 powers the Stageline extremely well. Simple, elegant solution that sounds superb.
Kinderspiel, do note that the Stageline comes in different flavors depending on your cartridge type (moving magnet, low or high output moving coil). Hopefully you have a dealer who will sell you the right one.
A work colleague has recently bought a Roksan Xerxes/Dyna vector/Stageline/SN2 and it just sings
It works fine powering it off the preamplifier (Tried with either bare nait 5 and flatcap on it which improved replay).
But , won't somehow limit digital play goodness this way?
I can't really tell whether my Naim cd player at the time was affected by loss of quality
