MC cartridge for a Jelco SA 250-D on LP12.

Hi all Girls and Boys!

The old house maid decided that the armboard on my Linn was dirty and needed a dusting.

Result: arm and cartridge gone. I hope the rest is still ok albeit the armboard moved slitghtly to one side.

Of course i didn't want to humiliate the old, loyal lady with my award winning barracks psalms.

I took the path to the country to make my growlings for this double hammer blow.

I was already thinking of changing the tonearm and, as i wrote here some weeks ago, i was thinking of a Nima but funds languish.

I got a Jelco SA 250-D with a Jelco "L" shape din plug cable that will be fitted with a new collar and on a new armboard for Linn toneamrs.

Now i turn to your experience. Given the tonearm mass at 20 grammes which MC cartridge would you mount on the Jelco? I want to keep the standard head shell for the moment.

I have no chance to get an audition so i was thinking about Dynavector 10X5, the DV 20X2 or the Denon 103/110.

I have  MM phono boards in my Nac82 that i could eventually change for the MC.

Any tip very appreciated!

Thank you!

Fralin pickups - that's fairly 'exotic' by guitar standards. I'm sure it made the Strat sing

I'm having a 5-string bass custom made by Joe Knaggs - he wants to put Fraling pickups into it. Let's see what happens

Hi Adam!

Of course is not only the pickups and there's plenty of small companies like Lollar or Novak etc that make very good products.

In the end is how the intrument makes you feel that's important. Assuming that the most of us will not become a rock star

Enjoy!

So........it has been quite an hard work. Of course i'll NOT show you the bounce thing as i got to that level of frustration that makes you stop at one point and think that you must take the fact that you can't get any better.

I'll pack and send it to good Peter for some upgrade and check but i want to spin some records before.

The Hana SL i bought is good right out of the box and gave me no troubles in fitting. Now it's running and gives no roughness. Treble is getting better only after a couple of hours and bass is right "into the music". Detail is great but do not cover music which is a thing i like. If i think that my amps have never been serviced i think i can call myself happy!

Richard the headshell is too light and i think i'll go for an Ortofon which should be a couple of grammes heavier than the standard Jelco. The counterweight (the light one) is all the way up the pipe and there's no way to make the heavier counterweight work. The arm is a feather!

G, wow, that Hana cartridge must be light!

Edit:  OK, just looked at the spec and it's a real featherweight at 5gms.  Possibly look at a shell weight or a heavier headshell such as a 13 or 14g one.

My experience is not that wide but if you have the chance just test one.

I'm using "The usual suspects" Sheffield Lab vinyl to test and what i hear is quite good. Despite the general initial rough set up this cart is quite fun! I've been out to get some food etc for half of an hour and when i got back i had to sit down......

I think the Ortofon 9000 should do the trick. It should be enough heavy to let me balance the arm a little bit better albeit i could set the stylus weight at 2 gms.

G, if you're using the supplied mounting hardware then there's every possibility the nuts and bolts are aluminium.  Try replacing with good quality stainless steel - this will not only allow a tighter more secure fit (although be careful if the body of the Hana is plastic or similar) but will add weight where you need it.

You're right Richard! Forgot that possibility! I'll take a trip to the local hardware shop! Thanks a lot!
