Naim app vs Sonos app

Posted by: vinylhead on 08 April 2016

Apologies if this has been covered before, but here we go...

I upgraded from Sonos Connect, through NAC202, to 272. Pre amp is amazing. LP12 through the preamp, turbocharged with Hicap is just stunning. Tidal at 44.1 also sounds tippity top. My only beef is...

...that the Naim app only allows one user at a time. I found Sonos much more user friendly, including the ability to run the app on a couple of devices simultaneously, meaning the Good Lady Wife and I could add to playlists at the same time, making for entertaining evenings listening alternately to good music (mine) and drivel (hers), but at least with a good degree of WAF. She's now upset that it's all my choices...

What's not to like? Well, WAF is the issue here.

Seriously, the Sonos app (on IOS) is MUCH better than naim's.

I used to think the same, although I've come to appreciate the Naim app as best in class. It is a far better experience than sonos, which used to be the gold standard.

but I do agree at it is an irksome irritation to limit connectivity to a single control point. THe icing on the cake?

The Naim app has certainly improved a great deal since it first appeared, and I now think it's pretty good. (You are using the latest version, aren't you?)

Good suggestion re. multiple users, though, it would be a nice option for social gatherings.

Why don't you just use the Sonos Connect -> 272 via optical?  I think the sq is a bit less than optimal but you can continue to use the Sonos app.

You could, of course, just share the device you are using to control the choice of music. A bit like taking it in turns to go to the LP/CD storage racks to choose some music.

However, I can see the problem. Having a number of devices all with the MuSo control app, I occasionally pick up one of the non-active devices and wonder why on earth the MuSo isn't responding.

Useful comments, cheers Group! I sold the Connect to help fund the 272, and can't see the point of using another streaming device instead of the 272's inbuilt one. There's no doubt the sq is great - I'm loving it. Simultaneous multi-user on the app would indeed be the icing on the gateau.

+1 exactly.. Sonos can access an array of streaming services that mostly use lossy media that simply will not ever be present within the Naim integrated services.. So yes as a transport the Sonos Connect SQ will be less than using a precision Naim transport..but it  will allow you to use the Sonos app and its services with your Naim.

its what I do here..and your Sonos app can even play from your UPnP DLNA media server when you need to. On my Naim app I simply define one of my inputs as  "Sonos". Great for party playlists etc.
