Nait 5

Just wanted to know if you can add a Nap 250 to a Nait 5 without the need for a Hicap?

Hi,

you can, but not a NAP250. In theory you can just remove the double link plug from the Nait, leave the smaller one in place and connect a power amp to the Nait's signal out B using a SNAIC4; in this case, though, it's the power amp that powers the Nait's preamp and you must not connect the Nait to the mains.

But the 250 has no PSU for a preamp, so you can only do it with a NAP150, and perhaps a 160 and a 200.

Hope it helps.

You can download the NAIT5's manual on the net, if you don't have one. Just do some search.

Thanks Massimo, Might go for a 180 then eventually replace the Nait with a 72

The 180 is a 'dryer' amp than a 250, 'comes from' the CB160 I suppose (not sure, though); it has a certain composure and refinement that the bigger brother lacks a little. I think it's best suited to mildly 'generous' speakers. I like it a lot, it's accurate and elegant.

I love the Nait5 a lot; I couldn't tell the preamp sound from the power stage of course, but have always loved its warm and mellow presentation, which is not at all poor of lucidity; a lovely integrated. I wonder how the Nait5 and a NAP180 would be together... Would you mind post an impression if you do the move?

Thanks

Just to be clear, I presume you're talking about the original Nait 5, which i believe can be used as a preamp only, into an external power amp. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think all later incarnations (5i, 5si) lack the pre-out required to add a separate power amp. That aside, I believe Massimo is correct that as a 250 cannot power a preamp, including the preamp stage of the Nait, you would need a separate PSU, e.g. a Flatcap....or a 200.

My understanding as well.

Dear Neilo,

I used to have a 180. It is a good amp.

Have you still got the Royd Minstrels! I hope you had fun with them!

Best wishes from George

I'll check my manual when I get home tonight, but I believe you can add either a pre or power amp to the Nait 5.

Mine is still going strong 12 years on - I have it in my office at work driving a pair of Totem Dreamcatchers.  I replaced it at home with a Nait XS2 - similar sound but more power and grip with the XS-2.

Enjoy!

If you're thinking of NAC282, HC, NAP250 as the end game, then put a NAC282 on the Nait 5 first.

No mention in the manual of adding a pre.  Diagrams show adding a flatcap or a power amp or both but no pre.
