Death becomes her !
Posted by: rjstaines on 09 April 2016
When I worked in the music industry, it was a well accepted fact that the death of an artist was good for sales ! Like it or not, this was true.
I've been browsing the forum this morning and cannot help but observe that this same truism applies to Ovators...
I'm wondering should I buy a pair or two and wait for their rarity value to soar through the roof ? (Or is everyone hyping themselves up, as I've noticed can happen in this wonderful world of hifi that we all inhabit?)
Roger
BTW, for my own part.. tried 'em, didn't like 'em, so wouldn't actually be putting any running hours on my proposed investments
With interest rates at rock bottom it might be worth a punt!
Think I'll stick with my NBLs though.![]()
Is "rarity value" a thing? I'd think that "yesterday's news" would tend to push prices downward.

i wouldn't. if they ceased the production, its because the public didn't embrace them well. (didn't sell enough)
don' know one single person who invested in hifi and profited with used items...

True. But a great shame. Especially considering some items from boutique brands that have made stellar products. Maybe in a couple hundred years there will be some gains, but we will be long dead by then. Those huge 200 kilo concrete speakers could be the elephant/heirloom in the room.
I think it's not a wise investment as they never reached the cult status of some other products we know in this business. But feel free if you want an additional side table for your plants :-)
IMO, buying a few Nait 2's would be a far better investment! ![]()

In the States, could you share yesterday's news?
Allante!

A thing of great design. But why have the choice of " normal " to run it ?
apart from the knowledged conversed, it would of confused the SWMBO wether listening was normal or not !

But 'cult status' comes after a product ceases production, doesn't it? I'm thinking Ovators are developing a cult following as we speak.
Oh, and it's worth noting that the sloping top of the Ovators makes it extremely difficult to balance plants on there (not impossible, but difficult). I had a quick run through the photos posted on the forum and none of the Ovator owners have plants on top. Possibly because over-watering causes difficulties in the BMR ??
Roger
My wife insisted on putting plants on top of the speakers despite my desperate pleas not to. I now have S600 Ovators :-)

Any chance of a photo, Beachcomber? You'd be filling a huge gap in the archives of system pics... you could even start a trend amongst the new Ovator cult followers who don't yet adorn theirs with plants.
BTW, I'm wondering, are you still married to her? I ask because greenery atop an Ovator must place a huge strain on any marriage
I can only imagine my own reaction... but then I have B&W 802's and balancing anything on those tweeters is an impossibilty (I hope).

So would you hope to sell them to people who lack your good taste? Not very altruistic

I'm struggling to think of any financial investment that could be called altruistic, although there may be some somewhere in the world. Ovators, you're right Chris, would not be one of them.
So far as the eventual sale, I'm not sure I'd care whether the buyer's taste aligned with mine or not, it's not something I've ever looked for in a potential buyer of used audio equipment... but then I've never sold Ovators.
In hindsight, though, speculating on the potential cult status of a line of speakers is probably not the best way to fund my 500DR upgrade, eh?
