iPhone 5s & nstream 4.8

Posted by: GraemeH on 11 April 2016

My iPhone 4 and iPads allow me to see the volume + - symbols one above the other when I choose this as 'bottom bar volume control'  in 'other settings'. My iPhone 5s does not give this as an additional volume option.

Can anyone advise please?

Thanks,

G

Hi

That seems to be the case. My iPhone 6 can control volume on my Uniti streamers, but does not have that function via my NDX streamer (with the 'system automation' enabled). iPad (1st generation) iPad Air and iPad Pro can control the volume on all streamers.

Hi Adam & thanks for responding - I'm querying why the extra option 'Bottom bar volume control' is not an option in nstream 4.8 on an iPhone 5s when it is on all my other earlier i devices...curious.

So am I

Looks like a question to the Naim's development team. It does not seem to be iOS dependent - an iPad runnign the same soft does have that bottom bar / volume control available.

My iPhone 5S has that available and I used it all the time until I changed the phone at the weekend, but that was with Uniti streamers.  However it didn't have the volume control option at the bottom of the screen on the ND5 XS I used until last December (but did with the NAC N272 that I replaced the ND5 XS with).

I recall seeing this discussed on the forum before, but possibly in the beta forum, and as the NDx streamers don't have volume controls internally, the reason Naim didn't provide + or- buttons to control via System Automation on the iPhone was simply to do with their judgement about shortage of space on the right part of the screen. i.e. Enough space for a thin linear volume slider but not for two sensible sized buttons.

...Yet they appear on my older & smaller iPhone 4 and work just fine with the NDX.

Graeme,

I have an iPhone 5s running 4.8 but my NDS is still on 4.3.  I get the two large - and + buttons at the bottom of the 'now playing' screen.  I don't have the option of the volume slider, as I think that changed on the streamer software release 4.4? Do you not get the option of the two buttons rather than the slider?

As I recall, with the ND-series you should get the + and - buttons and on the Uniti series you should get the slider.

Yes, the streamers get the buttons, and the Unitis and 272 get the slider. Presumably the 172 also has the slider, but I don't know for sure. It would seem very odd to get the buttons on an iPhone 4 but not 5: isn't the screen on the 5 a bit bigger.

It is yes, a little longer.  I changed from a 4 to 5s but can't remember it being any wider, just a bit longer, but I wouldn't think the software would be iPhone version specific, just a bit more condensed on a smaller screen. I guess it's more to do with what software is being run?

I get the normal + -  buttons - it's the newer additional 'Bottom bar volume control' that is absent on the iPhone 5s...but available on the older iPhone 4.

My iPhone 5c had the option for the bottom bar volume control. I don't understand why the 5c has it but the 5s does not. Are you using the latest app and software?

Posted on: 12 April 2016 by GraemeH

Yup - Simply changed from a 4 to a 5s yesterday and hey-presto butttons gone!

I'll try reloading the app.

Does the 5s have the latest iOS?

My 6s runs 9.3 and no buttons for NDX either (volume control via system automation settings). Slider is present for the SuperUniti and Qute.

I've had System Automation 'disappear' many times following updates to my NDS.  One has to re-enable it in the settings sometimes after an update.  Check your ND-series streamer to ensure it's enabled.

On the iDevice, in the Naim App, make sure that "show volume control" is turned on in its settings.

Either one of those can make the volume controls stop appearing.

System automation works ok.

It was the settings on the iPhone app that had to be updated. Got the volume control back

I have all up to date NDX software and iOS & the most recent app 4.8. A reinstall of the app has made no difference unfortunately.

A minor inconvenience I suppose.

It's irritating though, because it should work.

I've reported the issue in the Beta forum, and hopefully a tech savvy Naim superperson will know what's up!

Thanks HH!

According to Naim, the latest version of the app does not have the buttons for ND streamers when used on an iPhone, but does have them when you use an iPad.

The bottom bar slider, for the Unitis and streaming preamps, shows on both iPhone and iPad.

Their conclusion is that you were running the previous version of the app on the iPhone 4.

There you go.

I did some checking - once the 'volume control' has been enabled on the iPhone app, the - and + buttons are available. They are on the 'second' page of the app.

In the streaming mode, one needs to click at the bottom bar, where a title is being displayed. This opens a 'second page' with a large picture of the artwork. At the bottom 3 buttons are available: - / + / mute.

They have been on the 'now laying' screen (the second screen as you call it) for a long time. The recent(ish) change was to add them to the home screen, from which they have now gone.

Indeed.

That's why I continue using my 1st generation iPad - the old nStream app seems to be more intuitive.

Thank you very much indeed for clarifying this HH.
