Any Mac/Synology users? Help required!
Posted by: pixies on 12 April 2016
I have recently moved from a Windows laptop to a Macbook Pro and am having some difficulties uploading music from my Macbook to the NAS
On my Windows laptop I used to upload via Filestation in DSM, however using a similar method on my Macbook I cannot get DSM to 'see' my Mac and the folders I want to move to the NAS.
I have the latest DSM installed as well as latest Java on my Macbook
I am currently searching through the web and Synology forums for guidance but thought I might get some useful help here.
Any suggestions welcome
I just drag and drop. Click the hard drive image which brings up a list of locations to move files to, one of which is the synology. I then select the music files ive ripped and drag them to the music folder in the nas.
I have the hard drive image pinned to my desktop as I use it frequently, but I think its within a folder in launch ( the rocket icon in the taskbar).
I'm not a Mac user but with Windows I see the NAS via Windows Explorer & use that to drag/drop/copy upload to NAS, you seem to be saying it the other way round, "DSM to 'see' my Mac".
I think you might need (maybe) to do something to set file sharing ........... is this a worthwhile read ........... http://www.howtogeek.com/19111...ux-pcs-on-a-network/
Ok thanks. Drag and drop seems to be the way to go. Will check out your suggestions when home later.
Drag and drop (or Copy and paste) works fine for me using OSX Finder. Simple.
Thanks Chris. As I stated I'm new to the Mac way of things so would appreciate a brief step by step guide of what to do. I'm familiar with finder, so I open finder....
1. Open Synology DiscStation (it seems to open in Safari by default.)
2. Find the folder you want to save to - or create it if you haven't already.
3. Open a finder window, and find the files you want to put on the Synology.
4. Drag the files from the Finder window to the folder on the DiskStation.
You obviously need to be able to see both at the same time. You can just reduce the size of the finder window, and drag it to one side so it doesn't obscure the destination folder in DiskStation.
Thanks Chris. I appreciate you taking the time to set this out. I just didn' t want to waste another evening clumsily faffing about so this is great for me .
Hi pixies -
ChrisSU is exactly right for finder -> browser actions. Just so you know, you can also directly mount the Synology in Finder (look under Network and you should see "DiskStation") and then it's drag and drop or copy / paste from one Finder tab to another, just like normal. For large file counts, best to copy in groups; the browser d'n'd is limited to 500 files at once (as I found out when manually archiving photos...)
Regards alan
I find it much easier to use Finder in OS X to drag and drop files than to use File Manager in Synology. Finder is OS X's 'file manager'
Result!! Home from work, have followed above instructions and everything worked. Using the Finder in OS X to drag and drop is so much easier than File Manager. So thanks again to the marvellous forum!
Isn't drag & drop (copy) what you did in Windows Explorer??? Its what I have always done, Win-7, 8 & 10
It's what I do too. I didn't realise there is another way. I've mapped the nas in Windows explorer so it's always visible.
There is an option to browse files from your local computer with File Station within DMS. It requires java so always needs updating and sometimes doesn't work with certain web browsers ie Chrome. Its the method I have always used over the years and really didn't know about the other options until moving over to the Macbook.
I'm glad it worked out.
FWIW you can also use the Synology DiskStation in a browser, including Chrome., exactly as on a Windows PC. You download the Synology Assistant app for Mac and it fires up the webpage, which is essential for updates and management. I'm using it right now on my MacBook Pro.
That said, for file upload I also use Finder and just drag'n'drop the files directly.
Why not just use finder? Command+K to connect to server. Type smb:\\ follow with your NAS name and connect. Choose the folder you want to mount and a network drive will appear on your desktop. Then you can browse through to the location or folder then drag the files there.
