isolation platform/power lead for Mu-so and QB

Posted by: DaveV on 12 April 2016

With the purchase of my Mu-So and also now its baby brother, i was wondering if any members had mounted these on any isolation devices, and if so to what advantage?

also would the purchase of a dedicated power cable such as the MARK GRANT dsp 1.0 give me any sonic advantage.

i am very happy with these amazing boxes and they have allowed me to enter the world of NAIM for the first time.

i look forward to any advise, experience you have had.

I purchased a Muso some months ago and initially located it in my bedroom on top of an ikea bedside table. The Muso sounded terrible, bass was too overbearing. Then moved it around the house and eventually decided to use it in the kitchen on top of a large ( and heavy ) glass table. The sound was transformed, bass was tighter and the sound became more open. Basically the Muso is a speaker cabinet and placed onto something wooden can affect the sound. There is already a company that sells a dedicated metal stand for the Muso,my feeling is that it sounds best on glass and/or metal stands. I also added some Bluetac underneath the Muso plus I also tried a few power lead upgrades ( which made an improvement). The only negative with the Muso is that the bass can be too strong at times which overpowers the midrange, I just hope that Naim update the firmware to enable the bass and treble frequencies to be adjusted independently.

Hi Dave

I can't help thinking "are you mad?". The Muso's are supposed to be fun, easy to use, and high quality and for very little money in the big scheme of things. Why would you let audio nervosa rear it's ugly head. Move them around a bit if you must but I beg you, don't get us started on optimizing Muso's. Next will be  $200 Muso Shitaki stones, mini-Stillpoints, aluminum-wrap feet isolators and cryo-treated plugs! Dave, it's not too late to save yourself.

Cheers

+1 for Clay

Having said that:

Location in your room is important - mostly to do with how it resonates with the surroundings and how the low frequencies spread around.

If you want to experiment a bit, without going down a route of no return, you can try the following:

Get yourself a glass chopping board and some large, self adhesive bump-ons (to act as feet).
Place your Muso on it and see if there is any noticable improvement.

If there is an improvement you can approach a local manufacturer and get them to make you a custom-sized glass pane. I'd recommend: black, toughened glass, 10 mm thick. Get some classic VibraPods and create a VibraPod sandwich (descriptions are on their website). Total investment: GBP 50 - 60 for the whole thing.

Got my makita dab radio at work here sat on someone's freezer giving it ocean colour scene full on.

I wonder if I should move it to the window cill or maybe even the cooker because it has a glass lid.

At the moment it's running off the 18v battery. Maybe it will sound better plugged in to the mains but the lead that comes with it doesn't look like it will sound much good.
