Nerina Pallot live in Manchester

Posted by: dayjay on 15 April 2016

Nerina Pallot is currently on her UK tour and last night I had the privilege and pleasure of watching her live in Manchester.  The venue was the Gorilla, which is one I had not been to previously but one that I hope to visit again because it was a lovely intimate venue with really excellent sound.  My wife and I were quite literally touching the stage, or resting our beer on the stage as the case may be.

After a decent support act Nerina came on stage at 9pm with a three piece band supporting her.  Although I like her music I was not sure what to expect in a live environment, I certainly didn't expect her to be as brilliant as she was.  The band were very tight and very accomplished but she was far and away the star of the show, hugely talented and with a lively entertaining personality, she played most of her more famous hits and a few besides.  I can quite honestly say that this was the most enjoyable gig I have ever been to.

There are still a few dates left on the tour around the country, I would seriously recommend to anyone who likes good live music to pick one up, at the princely fee of £20, and go and watch her because she is just brilliant.

+1

bought her first album on release. Saw her support Suzanne Vega at Salisbury city hall a couple ish yrs later, solo, swapping between guitar and piano, touring her 2nd album "fires". Saw her again record store day 4 (?) yrs ago playing inside square records Wimborne. Chatted with her on both occasions. Have every release.

Good write up, dayjay. Glad you enjoyed the gig.  I've got tickets to see her at Portsmouth next Tuesday and am very much looking forward to it. I've seen her once before, which was pretty much the first time I heard her music. That gig made me a covert and I've since become quite familiar with her songs so I'm expecting to enjoy next week's gig all the more.  She certainly is one talented lady, and I thought she had a nice sense of humour with the audience too. Very human. Surprising that she's not a bigger name in the industry.

Absolutely Mike, we are amazed she's not a bigger star.  My wife was an instant convert after the gig and we loved her personality too.  I'm sure you will have a great time, let us know what you think.

Saw Nerina last night at the Union Chapel in London. Got all her albums but I've never seen her live. 9 piece band on stage! (which included a four piece string section and a harpist)

Great stage presence in a wonderful venue and if there was any justice in this world she would be a superstar. Singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist - she does it all and looks stunning.

Just as I thought it couldn't get any better she's joined on stage by Bernard Butler, yes the one and only legendary Bernard Butler.

Bought the 12 CD EP set just to complete my collection.

Oh yes and the support Samuel Taylor was very good indeed - best support act and best gig this year and I've seen Ethan Johns, Ryley Walker and Meg Baird already.

Sadly as I type I'm sure there are many who will be going Ethan who, Ryley what, Nerina err. It's all about discovering new (great) music.......

Nice write-up, Andy.  Must have been especially nice to see her at the Union Chapel. A wonderful venue, even if the pews are a little hard on ones backside.

Saw Nerina in Portsmouth last night. Didn't get home until 1am but it was worth it.  The venue, Wedgewood Rooms, is a small one with some 200 or so in the audience so her backing band was small, just three, but the size of the venue adds to the intimacy - I was only five rows back from her and she seems to love chatting to the audience.  She played material I was mostly familiar e.g. Rousseau, Idaho, Geek Love, Damascus, and it was wonderful.     And then we got to the encore and she sang Sophia......what can I say?......

Oh, and I agree with AndyP19 about Samuel Taylor, both as a support act and as the lead guitar in her band.  Bought his CD afterwards and had a brief chat with him. Nice guy and seemed very down to earth. Hope he does well in his career.

Mike,

I bet that was great in such an intimate venue with the band back to 3 members.

The Samuel Taylor CD is amazing. I bought Nerina's 2014 year of EP's set where she released an EP each month. So that's 60 tracks I'm looking forward to.

One thing I loved about her was her story about working at Mute Records (her song Mr. King is about her time there) and she mentioned her favourite Mute artist was Diamanda Galas now anyone who loves Diamanda Galas is someone to be admired!!!!
