Vinyl Question

Posted by: SNAIC in the Grass on 17 April 2016

Is it me or does the last song on many records sound like hell?  I.e. the one closest to the center of the record...why?

Is it the geometry of the arm?  Rotational Speed?  The way the vinyl is made?

Not making this up, many vinyl have their last song on a side sounding like glass shards being dragged on a chalk board.

Hi SNAIC, I don't know this track but a quick play on iTunes  does sound as you suggest that it is a quieter track.  How old is your stylus in usage terms? May be worth having it checked.

Almost a year...about the time I have it one year I plan to go from RP3/Elys to RP6/Exact

Update...

With the new RP6/Exact I really don't notice this phenomena so far.  There are a couple of records that do it badly and I'll have to check that one, but overall I haven't noticed something that I did notice on a lot of records before.

Good news indeed. Was there any comment from your dealer on the stylus wear? I see the Elys is an elliptical tip and the Exact has a "vital" tip which is supposed to track better.

Nah, I just handed over the RP3 and took the RP6...I probably wore out the Elys though as much as I listened...nearly nonstop.
