Upgrading in Anger
Posted by: SNAIC in the Grass on 20 April 2016
I'm very disappointed, perhaps even *angry* with the forum members. Me having asked a complicated Vinyl question, and receiving not a single suggestion to upgrade. Only "adjust this" or "try that."
Even going so far as to hint at upgrading twice, with not even a single suggestion to try a better deck/cartridge combo in a different (glossy) color. Usually I can simply bring any ol' insignificant whine or sniffle to these hallowed forums, and quickly get several suggestions to upgrade, but in this case you've all let me down.
Someone did suggest that their $20,000 LP12 might sound better than my RP3, but that is so much hot air. Nope, not even a suggestion to try a Chord Yugo. In the face of this insolence, I've [furiously] put an order in for an RP6 / Exact (glossy black).
I'm willing to look past this little incident, but don't let it happen again!

It's the new anti-upgrade gestalt in action.
It won't last long.
Since you've invited a pounding, here goes .....
One immediate suggestion is to cancel your order for the glossy black RP6 and get the glossy red upgrade
. Take a walk on the wild side.
Then, once you're settled with your new TT combo, find a more dynamic replacement for the Exact (easy task)
.
Ditch your Osmonds and Carpenters LPs and spin some a real Texas boy could be proud to play - SRV, ZZ Top, Janis Joplin, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison
.
Seriously though, congrats on your upgrade. Should play great with your system.
I've expanded a lot into Jazz, and the wife and I have quite a country collection now (we were both born in Texas and grew up listening to country).
Classical collection is growing as well, and I've also pushed into Reggae with some of the most famous of those albums.
RP3 to RP6 doesn't seem like it is worth the upgrade. You should have gone to RP8 with a new phono stage at least.
Feel better now?
A little...thanks. *sniff*

I've just come late to this, but I don't do vinyl. So, in the spirit of only recommending solutions that we like ourselves, and thus think everyone else should adopt, here's my recommendation...
Drop the RP3 and RP6; setup a NAS and a network, and buy an NDS. ![]()

Thank goodness the forum is back on form. ![]()
Ditch the method of increments and get the RP10. I got the 8 about 2 months before the 10 came out but had no idea the new TT was imminent. It just leaves that itch as well all know. Oh, get a super capped Superline to match. Easy.

Skip RP6 and go for RP10 / Apheta with Aria. It matches the new power supply too ![]()
i think the forum has become less active since its, erm, upgrade a few months ago. Upgrade = a bit like changing to vinyl from a digital source such as Mac Mini/Audirvana/Hugo, reputed by some to exhibit more analog character than the oft-objected-to digital character that vinyl-lovers draw attention to, but without the limitations of vinyl (recording/mastering allowing).
Perhaps the question should be, what is the best vinyl replay system for ripping yourcollection... Ripping vinyl is great opportunity to go through an entire collection from end to end listening at the same time, though if I were you I'd just dump those Country & Jazz albums and save time and file storage space... But then, I'm not you, and fortunately for musicians we music buyers are a mixed bunch!
Ripping vinyl? I thought we were talking upgrade, not retrograde.
Just read you complaint .... easy tiger... my experience is as follows...take heed. I had Rega planar 3 with RB300 and K9 ....all I did was substituted an LP12. I kept RB300 and same cartridge. The difference was penominal the best upgrade period.
This dug out information I had never heard before....and was fantastic.
Buy a second hand LP12 ..... preforably with ittok arm and use something like an audio tech OC9.....
You will not regret .... this set up will sound great with tons of detail....and match all but the very best that cd has to offer....
Enjoy.

Unless it has plasticisers in it, it's hard to rip vinyl: It tends to bend and then snap. ![]()

First off, the post was multi-purpose. First it was tongue-in-cheek to point out how I was not bombarded with upgrade advice. ![]()
Second was to tip my hand as to my upgrade to RP6/Exact.
Yes I've considered the LP12, and may one day do it...but my first goal was to try the Rega line from RP1->Rp3->Rp6 and see what happened. My dealer gives good trade-ins so I can do this incrementally without any risk and at a decent cost.
That said, I will jump on an LP12 one day if I see a good used one; they are not to be found in these parts nowadays as vinyl is really becoming popular.
As for matching CD...I feel my RP3 already had way more soul than a CD.

Don't do that The RP6 will rtrounce the Linn.
Be a patriot and get a proper american turntable: VPI!
Try Michell Gyro with Lyra.

That's a very convincing pitch for the job as the "Nigel Farage' of the forum. ![]()
FFS, just an RP6? After reading all that? ![]()
