Unitiserve - this is really really unfair

Posted by: antmast on 21 April 2016

Well, I happened to use the Naim Desktop Client to look at my albums, and right clicked on the properties item. Well I saw much more information than I am currently seeing for albums on the Unitiserve app for the laptop. Its just that the laptop is the crux of my setup. Doesn't this mean someone owes us an update?

ANTMAST,

NDS is approximately 3 years old - so in NAIM term's it's relatively new. It's the newest of their streamer range. What is being developed now is a streamer to match the Statement. So no need to hold for anything new from the Classic range.

Funds allowing, do go for the NDS - I had it on loan for 2 weeks (in place of my normal NDX) and it is sublimal. Now I'm trying to figure out how to tell my wife, that we need to swap our NDX for an NDS

I used to have a Moon 380D (first generation) DAC - sold it promptly as soon as I heard what a SuperUniti can do.
When you go to separate Naim streamers each of their DACs betters Simaudio.

As far as power supplies are concerned - I only heard the NDS with 555PS. It's a natural combination.
NDS can also be powered by XPS or ND5XS too. This is then done via 1 burdny lead.

As far as amps are concerned.... Of course the higher up the range, the more details you will hear from the NDS. Please remember that primarily it's the pre-amp section that is responsible for the sound shaping / quality.
Having said that - personally I wouldn't have any reservations about connecting an NDS to a SuperNait 2. It will respect this wonderful source.

Do you have a dealer that could offer some home demos and advice? I sense from your quesitons there isn't one in sight (I could be wrong of course).

After reading earlier posts on this thread I wonder if we shouldn't expect a US2.

How will it be? How should it be? High SSD capacity sub 2k£, linear PSU, high speed low noise network connections, enhanced data access and transfer software system, direct music download facility..? Maybe for tomorrow, in Munich, or for Christmas.:malin1:

The news of the death of the home music server does seem a bit exaggerated.  The music server that's also a ripper seems on life support however.

One question, for me, is how / whether Naim could differentiate themselves from the pack in this space.  Naim usually do so based on SOUND.  Their 'our rips sound better' approach didn't quite work out.  What can they offer that the Chinese can't offer cheaper? We'll pay a premium for the Naim name and black box, but in this space it's not simple.

Thanks for the input Claus,  I was aware of the basics & the FLAC conversion, as is the US owner.   He was talking about it, but I'm not sure if he did get that done .  I will need to go take a look myself but it sounds like the US has gone kaput. ...........  we are hijacking this thread ...... over & out

Update on this ......... PSU is kaput ........ he has a new one & the US is set to go to a new home after I have helped get it all moved & running OK on a NAS.

Agree with Bart  re at life support stage.   I really don't see the point as so much music is now download, 24-bit & DSD & a basic home laptop with a DVD drive does the rip job - & arguably better.

Mike - there is another aspect to a UnitiServe which I find very handy - acting as a UPnP server for my network. MinimServer does not offer the same functionality, I'm afraid (e.g. multiroom support).

Yes it does, or at least it does in my house.

Adam,  I don't understand;  my Synology / Media Server UPnP & Naim app run multi-room perfectly.  It was playing with a Muso over the weekend (& no I'm not)

Ah - OK , I haven't tried the multiroom with my Minimserver. Thanks for the tip.

For now I'm running US (as it's currently working OK) and trade in values in Poland are rather low - it's a very specialised product here, so no point selling it. I've also installed Minimserver on my NAS as an instantly available backup.

I have limited experience of multiroom, but if I understand correctly, there are two different things here. Naim streamers can, with some limitations to streaming rates, play in sync between up to five units. The US, on the other hand, can serve music files to a potentially unlimited number of Naim or non-Naim streamers. I would guess it's not the only server with this capability?

Minim and Asset can certainly do at least two....

If I recall US can serve up to either 6 individual streams to various streamers on the same network. Multiroom works a bit different - one of the streamers is a master one and 'takes over and controls' the other ones on the network.

Adam, if I remember correctly, according to the manual, there is no limit to the number of streams the US can serve up, other than the capacity of the network it runs on. Clearly, this is function I am unable to test, as I do not own an infinite number of streamers

Yes Adam is right. Any streamer can multi room and that is nothing to do with the server.

The Unitiserve can serve simultaneous streams which are not synchronised and can be completely different indeed.

As can Minimserver and Asset. The UnitiServe, unlike the Hugo, does not have magic powers.

Among them, only the Hugo can give you oral sex  a foot massage.

Is that a 'foot massage' as in 'Pulp Fiction' foot massage type?

Well, at least it sounds better than a 'Reservoir Dogs' ear massage!

Which button do I have to press for that and what colour should it be?

I think he meant aural sex.
