Show me your Mains Installation!
Posted by: tonym on 22 April 2016
Following on from Mr Halibut's recent contribution on the Moving Rooms topic, I thought it might be worth showing off our mains installations. Here's mine. As you see, there are several boxes, some black, some white. Some have lots of switches and wires poking out, and one has a little wheel that goes "Wheeee!!" ever so fast.
its a very tight squeeze in our meter cupboard -- but i 'll see what what i can do...

Not much room for a separate consumer unit here, unfortunately. I'm working on a solution to that, but in the meantime just use a dedicated spur on the main CU.
What I haven't got my head around is where I'd connect the extra CU, as I have an isolating switch after the meter so should possibly connect to that.

Chris, i'd advise you to ask a qualified electrician -- but i guess that is what you meant anyhow...

I'll certainly do that, Ken, just wondered if there was a downside to coming off the switch as opposed to straight from the meter. I'm pretty sure an electrician would think I was bonkers for even asking the question - and he'd probably be right!

well, i'm thinking of getting my ordinary 10mm radial cable to my main system replaced with a screened one. my electrician, who thought the idea of 10mm sq cable 'just for hifi' was totally loopy anyhow -- will have a field day when i mention this to him. ah well... we think we are normal anyhow (or do we??) so thats all that matters, i guess...

Given your wonderful set-up, Tony, I was expecting a picture of your own electricity sub-station!

Inspirational Tony, and nicely photographed
Apparently things are done simpler here in the US. To what sonic avail I have no idea.
All my household noise resides on the same feed. I doubt little would change if I put a dedicated breaker and circuit into this unit.
The alternative would be to install a separate meter for the hi-fi and the cost is prohibitive, the notion absurd.

That would be Sizewell B, providing power 24 hours a day without any interruption for the last 499 days, but now in the middle of a planned outage.

...and very fine electrons they are too Nick!
Remember, you only get to borrow them! (Even if you can ever pin down where the little buggers are!)

After your Ethernet trials, I'd have thought you'd run a mile from any screened cables!
Many years ago I had a dealer (Linn, not Naim) recommend that I used fire alarm cable for a dedicated spur because it's screened. It would have been much less than 10mm, of course, but he swore it would make a big difference. Never did get round to trying it.
Thought that might be Darke Bear's mains supply.
