Volume level when not listening.

Posted by: iwcpilot on 23 April 2016

I'm rather new to Naim so forgive me if this is a silly question. I purchased a Superuniti and love it. I leave it powered on when not in use. My question is whether it is important to turn the volume to 0 when I am not listening to it? Does it matter to the amp or speakers? Thanks in advance for your reply. Kyle

If you turn it off then you do not have to worry!

Best wishes, George

The answer is no, Kyle.  I leave my volume control at the last setting it was used while the system is not being listened to.  And, as with Naim's recommendation, I leave my system powered up.

George likes to turn his system(s) off but I think he will admit he is in a minority on here in this.

+1 for leaving it powered on. I don't change the volume level on my Supernait but I always mute it. There is always a low volume, high frequency hiss that comes from the amp, so by muting it I give my miss and tweeters a rest!

Thank you for the advice.

The gods leave theirs on but turn the volume down a tad so they can hear the music of the spheres, unsullied by mortal hiss.

Just so long as the hiss isn't from Jörmungandr.

I tend to instinctively turn the volume setting down - to avoid getting a shock the next time that I cue a record - but leave powered up most of the time (holidays, bad weather and the occasional power down excepted).

I always presumed the hiss came from the SNAICs.

Interesting supposition but I can't see a connection.

Why not use the mute button Chris?

Aye, a problem when you've got an ARO & there's static about! Fair makes you jump it does; one of the reasons I bought a Tiger Paw Elevator.

I listen at high volume when I can - cueing an Aro can be disconcerting if the volume has not been reduced or muted  I also used to have an issue with static but not since my most recent tweak to the LP12

I do Roger - but it is a mixture. l mute from the remote or turn the volume down at the preamp, whichever is easier. I rarely press the mute on the preamp.

My father used to live in a building that had an elevator made by Schindler - yes it was Schindler's Lift!

Ok, I see. I was thinking in terms of touching the arm in which case you transfer static from yourself to the ground of the TT. This happens on rare occasions during cold dry weather with my RP6. Sounds like with the Aro you're getting a zap the other way 'round with the shock proportional to the volume setting. Didn't know this could happen.

I just leave the volume where I left from my last listen. I don't have any problems hearing hiss sound from my system. Is this normal?

I always switch to AV - which means while I have the AV receiver off that I have no hiss

I think the hiss is directly proportional to the efficiency of your speakers. If you've got lower efficiency speakers you may have to put your ear right in front of the speaker to hear much. In any event, if you've got no problems with hiss there's nothing to be concerned with.

The same as me, I think it's normal.

I leave the system powered up unless I know I am going to be away for more than 2 days.

Running NDX/SN2 here and I make it a habit to down the volume in case the NDX decides to have a mind of its own - not that this has happened before though. Call me paranoid but this allows me to sleep and work better !  :-)
