Where to store playlists

Posted by: PepsiCan on 24 April 2016

Hi

I'm confused about playlist locations. I'm using MinimServer with my music stored on a Synology NAS. I'm in anticipation of several streaming devices arriving, one being a Mu-So Qb.

For my playlists to be available to various apps and streamers, where should I locate them? I can't find much about it in the MinimServer instructions. I suppose the best location is somewhere on the NAS on which MinimServer runs? What would be needed for streaming apps to pick these up?

Thank you for your help.

How are you creating the playlists?

I store mine on the NAS

Once you've got your Muso (or any other Naim streamer) you'll be able to see your playlists in a folder, along with other folders - Album, Artist, Genre, etc. You will also have the option of creating playlists on the Naim app itself - these are stored on the app device itself, not on your NAS.

I use MP3Tag. Which folder on the NAS do you store them? And how does MinimServer see them?

I don't want to store them on the device/app as i will have multiple streamers and want to share playlists between them.

Fair enough. In fact I prefer to store them on the NAS too. I'm not sure how Minim handles them as I don't use it but there are plenty here who do if you need more answers.

On the NAS you are probably keeping your music in a directory called something like  /volume1/music/

Minim will see everything in there. I have a sub-directory called, imaginatively, Playlists

I have two streamers and they both have no issues seeing the playlists

This raises a most interesting point for me.

I have been using the Naim Apps to create playlists but they are only available on the device that created them.

I'd like to be able to create and store playlists on the UPnP music server (in my case a Melco with the default server which I believe is Twonky).

I would be most grateful for some pointers on how to do this (ideally from an IOS App).

Many thanks...Peter

Always on your server.
