Connecting two pairs of speakers to qute

Posted by: Artferg20 on 28 April 2016

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and would like some advice. I have a Naim Unitiqute 2, Guru junior speakers with an Rega RP3 in my lounge.

We have double doors that lead from the lounge to conservatory/study and would like sound to that room.

My question, what's the best way to connect another pair of speakers? Will this effect sound and can I operate the volume separately if in my study? My listening distance from the speakers is a metre, so need to be very compact. Any recommendations  on budget speakers please?

thanks

richard

Basically, you cannot add another pair of speakers. I suggest you buy a mu-so Qb. It can play independently from your nas or internet radio, or you can synchronise the two using the multiroom feature. The only thing you won't be able to do is play your records through it.

Richard, you can only connect one pair of speakers to the UQ.  However, the UQ does have a pre-out that can be switched on in the setup menu, and so long as an appropriately loaded interconnect was used (your dealer or Naim can advise here), that would enable you to connect a small pair of powered speakers or else a separate power amp and pair of speakers.

A s/h pair of "Active" Wharfedale Diamonds would do the trick for beer money, although there are other options out there, many of which are from the semi-pro world and wouldn't be expensive.

To operate the remote you would probably need an IR repeater although it's worth trying to see whether you can bounce the IR signal from your study.

Otherwise the Muso QB is ideal and you can run both in sync.

I once owned a pair of "Active" Diamonds. They were tons of fun, on the output of a CDP. The amp is in one speaker, which has a volume control on the back.

I used a NAIT 2 system off the UQ one as described by Richard above and with the help of the Naim IOS app.

Thanks for replies so far I currently have a qb upstairs, but would like to use my record player.

If I were to use the pre outs, does UQ  volume need to half way or 12 p clock to gain output?

thanks

Richard, I'm not sure I fully understand your question here - If you're using the pre-out the UQ is still the pre-amp and therefore controlling volume whatever the power amp or active speaker you choose to use.  So, if the UQ volume control is at 0 there's no output, but anything above that and there should be output to the amp.

Try Google "speaker switch", "speaker splitter" or "speaker selector". Many brands (such as QED) are available and they may be what you are looking for. They allow you to switch between multiple pair of speakers. I guess SQ will be affected somehow but how serious I don't know. Most are not expensive so may be worth a try.

Oh Richard..................

........back in the (good) old days, every dealer in the land had a "Speaker room" with banks of speakers. How else could you choose speakers other than by flicking a switch whilst a record was playing and instantly hearing the next passage on your 6th pair of speakers before flicking back to the first pair and running through 1 to 6 again and again .....

You've matured far too quickly !

Don, I haven't yet forgotten that frightful horror, the "comparator".  I even got to spend a frustrating afternoon with one at Sevenoaks hifi in Tunbridge Wells back in the '80s while trying to decide betwween a pair of Monitor Audio 252s, some B&W DM110s, and a pair of Heybrook HB1s which were all somewhere positioned on a wall shelf at the other end of the"speaker room".

Needless to say, I chose the wrong speakers that day..
