Asset

My old Synology nas has been getting a bit clunky lately so I've treated myself to a new one. I thought I'd try a QNAP for a change, which I set up yesterday - or rather, Trickydickie set it up while I made coffee and looked pathetic (thanks Richard!!) I then paid the princely sum of £21 for a copy of Asset. Unlike MinimServer which took me about two hours of head scratching, it was up and running in about five minutes.

Unlike Minim, it is really easy to set up to transcode, and it even rescans automatically when you add albums or change anything. And the best thing is that you can tweak it from the iPad without needing to load up the infernal MinimWatch. You can also find your recently added albums, which is great as I'm a forgetful old duffer.

The downside is that it's not so good with album artists and I've needed to tweak a few albums to get them showing properly.

The QNAP is very speedy, which is good, and it has a button on the front that you can press to back it up to a USB drive, just like the Melco.

It certainly doesn't sound worse than Minim, and may even be slightly better, I'm not sure. It's certainly louder for some reason, and I need to listen a couple of numbers lower.

Anyway, it seems jolly good, and thanks again to Richard.

With Synology WOL is used for waking & accessing the NAS over internet.   Its not required if the NAS is exclusively used for home network music store.  I have never enabled it     ...........

...........   It was a security issue a while back that caused Synology to issue a series of software updates.

Thanks, I now see that WOL is not relevant in my case, so I'll disable it. If anyone has a QNAP and can explain how to minimise its power usage without compromising the ability to just sit and play music, I'd be most grateful. According to the blurb it has a disk power down and system sleep mode, but I can't work out how to set them. Thanks!

HH, I have the settings below on my HS-251 and they do not interfere with the music playing. My NAS is fitted with an SSD but I don't know if that makes any difference.

Control Panel => System Settings => Power => Wake-on-LAN (WOL) tab => WOL: Enable

Control Panel => System Settings => Hardware => General tab => Enables hard disk standby mode: Tick mark in box, Time: 30 minutes

Thanks. I've looked at the hardware and my settings are the same as yours. I've turned WOL off, as its something to do with bigger networks I think. If it stops sleeping, I will turn it on again.
