Noise from Hi Cap power supply

Posted by: orestpsychi on 30 April 2016

Bought a second hand Hi Cap power supply, after it's been on for a while the Hi Cap produces a low buzzing sound. What can I do to stop the buzzing without having to turn it off every night?

Turn up the music?

seriously, not much you can do except turning it off. The quality of (or rather lack of quality) mains electricity means they often hum.

Well not much I'm afraid. Mine is humming away too. Though I hear that hum/buzz when all is silent and I am very near to that little bugger. It is possibly due to fat toroid inside protesting the quality of juice it's fed with. My CDP outclasses hicap in the buzz dept. though

My UQ2 buzzed, my SN2 buzzes and my Hicap dr buzzes, my tuner doesn't.  Just have to live with it I suspect

I think transformer buzz is a characteristic of the large toroidal transformers used in Naim Audio equipment. I occasionally  experience two or more of them buzzing away in (near) harmony. Sometimes turning off and on again resolves matters - for a while.

Not much - unless you sort out your mains supply (do search this forum for other threads). The noise you are most likely hearing is caused by minute voltage changes in the supply, which causes the transformer to behave in a way which you perceive as 'buzzing'.  Simon-in-Suffolk wrote a very good technical explanation on that.

Theirs only one complete solution, and its install a dedicated power supply.....it's a question of weighing up cost against annoyance of buzzing sound....

Dedicatwd power supply will help a bit. But will not solve all the problems, especially if voltage is not stable (cause of buzzing).

My last HCDR purred like a happy cat, I got to like it in the end; I bought a little rubber mouse and left it close to the PSU. It seemed to work, it never stopped purring.

Thanks for all the replies I thought it might  be a fault with the power supply, but if its an inherent problem that doesn't effect the music, I'll be happy with it.

It's not inherent to the power supply itself. It's inherent to our rubbish mains supply

I once observed (whilst rehearsing in a studio) how much a power supply voltage can fluctuate - it went from what should be a normal 230V all the way down to 221 and up to 237. Like a yo-yo. It's amazing how much it affected the sound from our guitar amps - valve ones suffered most.
And that was in a purpose-built music studio. So image what happens in a domestic environment.
