Chromebooks

Does anyone here use one and can comment on them?

I continue to use my desktop PC for 'busy' work, photo editing etc. and use my old laptop for smurfing while watching TV/listening to music etc. It is near it's end though. So, want a  replacement but don't need anything powerful or upmarket, just something for casual smurfing, emails, linking to hi-fi and with 13/14 inch screen and wouldn't need it for storage. Cheap Windows laptops seem barely able to run Windows 10 at the same time as anything else, so a Chromebook would seem to fit the bill on a cursory inspection, I'm just concerned I'm missing something.

The main drawback, perhaps the only significant one, is the reliance on an internet connection for main functionality

Yep, would be used at home but still dependent on internet connection staying reliable

A lot of folks do survive on just an iPad, Tobyjug, but it's always been a mystery to me how they do it.

I wouldn't be without my iPad. In fact my wife thinks it has become an integral part of me!! I use it to control my music access, tv, sports news, managing my accounts, dipping into this forum and others, it goes on......

Mrs Mike, aided by me'self, has just replaced her creaky old laptop.   We concluded that reliance on interweb & Cloud for functionality was OK for home use but travelling was a concern,  so Chromebook & MS Surface was eventually discounted.  She wanted light & cute & went for a 11.6 inch HP with 8MB/1TB & full fat 64-bit Win-10.  Because of its size & weight & the fact that is got a real keyboard,  it will become the family long distance travel PC.

As above I mainly use a Samsung tablet for controlling music through my NDX and general day to day stuff but always revert back to a desktop for ripping music sorting photo's etc etc.

One point if you take this route the larger size tablet or whatever becomes less of a requirement as I found the 9-10 inch screen optimum for all round use fairly light and easy to use.

Thanks folks, I just find tablets pretty annoying to use for most things so want traditional laptop

I think netbook style 10 inch screen is just a little small

Taking a look at the build it for you sites...
