250dr (upgrade) v 250.2
Posted by: Richieroo on 06 May 2016
Hi all just got my 250.2 back now dr upgraded......first thoughts have had it playing for 2 hours now......amp sounds much smoother, base appears to have a little more punch....however, at the moment 2 things strike me ..... not quite as musical yet and amp appears to sound less open. In fairness my 250.2 was left on perminatley so was fully stabilised ......... so l think things will change....as the days go on.
When these amps are upgraded do Naim replace the amp boards and transistors? It says on the ticket fit new caps and dr modules......
since you have new capacitors this will take a few weeks to open up.
I assume you had yours serviced + upgraded to DR?
Yes service and upgrade....
Unless I've just missed it, I don't think I've seen a report from someone who's had a 250.2 upgraded. It's mostly been people talking about new 250DRs. So I'll be interested to see how you feel it develops as it settles in. Obviously it should hopefully end up the same as one that's been DR since manufacture, but I'm curious about the journey with one's own 250.2.
I'll be considering the upgrade for my 250.2 eventually.
Hi Richieroo, I would suspect HH is correct, give it a little time. Nice post, a lot of 250.2 owners will be tuning in on this one.
Checked your profile, gear not listed. Curious!
Source, Pre amp, Speakers, and room dimensions, might be helpful for those of us planning the path you have chosen!
Thanks in Advance!

Profile updated woops!
Thanks RICHIEROO!
ALSO WHAT ABOUT INCREASE IN POWER!
Just curious, with all the hyperbole, and Audio Reviews, one would expect an improved product, but perhaps subtle, not mind blowing, but that’s what we do, pay thousands of dollars for subtle changes that would not noticed by the Norm, but then again we aren’t the Norm!
PDF could get the link, but google the red, and it comes right up!
“”Naim’s Discrete Regulation and bespoke transistor technology from its flagship Statement amplifier combine to revitalise the company’s classic power amp Review: Andrew Everard Lab: Paul Miller””
But right on the top of aforementioned Audio Review, I presume Naim listed the 250DR rated at 80 watts, 8 ohms, but within the Article it clearly states an increase of power 92, etc….
Punchier as Richieroo has pointed out, 30 times quieter, etc…..
Question, does anyone know, has there been a increase in power, and if so, is this increase in both the new manufactured 250DR and the Upgraded 250 DR ?
Allante93!
Have been playing it over 8 hours seems to be more open, gradually getting into the groove. Pleased with update .... however, the old 250.2 was still really good......since mine was a 2006 vintage.
Naim have kindly put a dr logo on my chassis plate

+1 to that.
I've got two 250DR driving my IBL's actively. But I have a 250.2 waiting for the arrival of a pair of Briks at some point in the future. It'll be interesting to hear how the upgrade fares as i might choose to upgrade my 250.2 rather than swapping for another new DR. Thing is, as you've had the service too, you'll be hearing the benefit of that as well as the DR upgrade.
Anyway, happy listening.
Best regards
Mark
Thanks for that absolutely. ..... it's quite a change the old amp was dynamic but grainy in the background that kind of added an energy ..... this amp seems smooth and mustley. ..... as mentioned earlier it seems to be becoming more open. Interestingly I may have to reposion my speakers further away from rear wall this will enhance the clarity of the lower mid.
I also had a 250-2 from that vintage for years, I must say after comparing the two with the newer DR amps, I feel the sonic differences are highly exaggerated here. Not saying the improvements are not worthwhile, but the sonic differences are not really, to my ears, the drastic difference as some here would have you believe.

To answer your specific question, no there has not been an increase in power over the older 250.2. the power that you see quoted in the Hi Fi News review is pretty standard for all amps, they usually put out more than rated power when tested.
As an example, the Cyrus 8a integrated is rated at 70w, when tested in was putting out 86w, pretty standard stuff to show an increase from most manufacturers quoted output.
Hi as usual the perceived power and drive is more important than figures ..... the dr defiantly feels more gutsy and powerful .... probably it's better transistors etc.
I would guess it probably is due to the fact you had your amp serviced along with the DR upgrade that makes it sound more gutsy, as your amp was due for a service being that it was 10 years old. They definitely do get tired sounding around that age.
Point taken .... but smoothness and lack of grain is defiantly different.
Hi all this is an update ... had DR just over a week....OMG what a transformation this amp to my ears is a very significant step forwards...it has an open explicit sofisticated character that is punchy and fast with bags of detail. Going back to 250.2 it is still a great amp ..... but my god you tell technology has marched on. I am personally amazed how the character of the amp changed in a week...when first powered up it was aghhh a bit ho hum....
I contacted maim the upgrade ... involves replacing the full circuit boards, new transistors.....well worth the money get saving! !!!
Good to hear Richieroo. Good thing I'm not in a hurry to get my 250.2 DR'd. The waiting list is telling a real story about the success of the new DR amps. For once the hyperbole seems to be justified, and not just within the Naim Forum sanctum but out in the real world also. ![]()
7 months now since mine arrived. Listening to John Coltrane on vinyl last night - oh my wow ![]()

Just curious, is the humming a thing of the past, with the new Dred Amps?

Nope. Mine buzz quite violently when SWMBO turns on the hairdryer. As does my non DR Supercap. Oddly the 250.2 never hummed or buzzed. Mostly they are pretty well behaved though.
my 250/2 is currently at the factory having service and DR... cant wait to get it back
Hi Jon, what turn around time were you quoted?
My 250.2 had an on off button fault so I put it to my dealer for repair and DR upgrade 3 months ago. Naim have booked it in their queue and say it's in the next batch but are talking about the end of this month! Lack of parts is the story. But not very impressive. Incidentally my dealer mentions he can't get new 250 DRs either at present.
just as well my dealer had an olive 250 he could lend me!
jatr
I have a new 250 dr on order along with a 252,Supercap dr and XPS dr these should have been delivered a couple of weeks ago but my dealer has informed me that they have a parts supply problem with the 250 dr hence thedelay. Naim have yet to update on a delivery date. Will try to get a update later this week.
simon, i wasnt quoted a turnaround time - i know its going to be the best part of a month at leaast. It went last week, and I am at Naim HQ next week and I know it wont be ready for then. So thats going to be 3-4 weeks minimum? I have no idea of their timeline, or queueing system, or how long it actually takes to do the work/QA etc. I'm honestly not bothered, I dont need it in the meantime.
