250dr (upgrade) v 250.2

Posted by: Richieroo on 06 May 2016

Hi all just got my 250.2 back now dr upgraded......first thoughts have had it playing for 2 hours now......amp sounds much smoother, base appears to have a little more punch....however,  at the moment 2 things strike me ..... not quite as musical yet and amp appears to sound less open. In fairness my 250.2 was left on perminatley so was fully stabilised ......... so l think things will change....as the days go on.

When these amps are upgraded do Naim replace the amp boards and transistors? It says on the ticket fit new caps and dr modules......

Wow!

Looks like Naim's stock is rising!  Perhaps I should give that 250 DR a listen!  Unfortunately I have to Drive to Canada, My local dealer doesn't have one in shop, and appointments only!

But from the sound of things, you gents can't get any home demo's with the 250 DR either, Hot Ticket!

I know the 250DR is leaner, punchier, and quieter, but are they still humming, or did Naim Correct that!!!!!   Anyone having Humming problems with the New DR Amps?

Would be nice to know before I invest in 3 DR Upgrades!

My 250DR is silent, but I have never had a humming Naim amp. Must have clean mains around here.

Mine is silent.

The HC I had with my 202 which I still have to power a PL had a humming with the 202 and also now with the PL.

Regards. Erich

Thanks Gentleman, my Hum isn't  bad at all, but perhaps my mains aren't bad. However, once in a while I can walk into the Room and here a slight hum.

But maybe its due to the HCDR, which I'm considering upgrading to SCDR.  Some say the SCDR has tendencies to hum more than the HCDR, so it's a  crazy call.

But I will need the SCDR, anyway to power the Snaxo 362, So it's a perfect opportunity to do an in house A-B between HCDR & SCDR!

Next upgrade Snaxo 362 latter this year, to transform my Briks!

Enjoy your Music! Good to hear that the 250DR"s aren't humming!

simon, i wasnt quoted a turnaround time - i know its going to be the best part of a month at leaast. It went last week, and I am at Naim HQ next week and I know it wont be ready for then. So thats going to be 3-4 weeks minimum? I have no idea of their timeline, or queueing system, or how long it actually takes to do the work/QA etc. I'm honestly not bothered, I dont need it in the meantime.

Thanks Jon, alas I don't have a spare amp and I tend to use mine most days I am home... I should discuss with Alastair to see if he would have a long term loaner ....

No hum with my 250 DR, no switch on noise.

No need to worry about any of the new DR amps as they are flawless

Hi Simon I have followed all your advice, but if you allow me, you may only have one regret about the 250 DR.

And that is, why you didn't get one earlier

i bought an ex-dem 250-2, which popped on start up (so was left on 24/7) and hummed so bad that SWMBO said 'get rid'........ So it was swapped for a 250DR.  No hum even when up close up.  to my ears a far superior solid clean sound.

if you can afford it I see no reason not to go DR

I have a mint Krell KSA50 (which Martin recently reviewed in Critic) if you are stuck for a power amp.

Muhahahahahahaha :-)

...or, if you want to borrow sommat better Simon, you're very welcome to borrow my trusty old NAP150. Just think how wonderful your fettled 250 will sound in comparison when you get it back!

Just curious, is the humming a thing of the past, with the new Dred Amps?

Allante93!

I have a 200DR, sitting on the same rack as a Superuniti, connected to the same double socket. The SU hums, the 200 is  silent. Just another bit of anecdotal evidence that maybe things have improved.

My old 250-2 hummed quite loudly but I can say the 250-DR is silent 99% of the time so a massive improvement on the earlier version and as for the SQ improvement...well we all know the answer to that one
