Stageline and Flatcap linkage
Posted by: Simoncarr on 06 May 2016
Hi
Looking for a little help.
Today I have a stageline linked into an Unitiqute using a DIN to RCA. The stageline is powered by a flatcap1. I saw on a manual (for a new flatcap xs) with the stageline linked to the flatcap and then the flatcap linked to the Unitiqute (or equiv amp). Does this work with the original flatcap and should I have the flatcap sitting between the PS and Unitiqute. ? I think my Stageline to UNitiqute cable is 4 DIN to RCA (from naim).
I am also changing my NAP 100 to a NAP 200 and wondering if the Flatcap will power the 200?
thanks and hope this isn't a stupid question.
Simon, firstly the original Flatcap can only power one item - be it a pre-amp, phono stage, headline etc.. but never a power amp (these have their own internal power supplies - some, like the NAP200 can power a pre-amp, so maybe that's where the confusion lies).
The original Stageline, when powered from a Flatcap, was designed to take signal from the Flatcap output. Later, Naim introduced a basic power supply called the i-supply, and this necessitated taking signal directly from the Stageline, hence an additional DIN4 was added to the Stageline thereafter. It means you can now do either. My own preference would probably be to take the signal from the Flatcap though, as you have seen in the manual with the Flatcap 2xs...
Question to Richard - My Stageline K is powered by the supercap, and I feed the pre amp with the signal from the Stageline DIN4, would that be the optimal option?

Everything that Richard said. This is what that would look like.
Stageline --->5pin to 5pin DIN--->Flatcap--->4pin Din to RCA---->Unitiqute---->RCA to 4pin ----> Nap200
Keep Stageline as far away from flatcap,UQ2 and amp as possible.

Simon, When was it last serviced?
Chris
Hi
Ok have now plugged it into the flatcap and it seems to work. Not sure I notice too much difference in sound quality, but will listen to a few more albums and see how it goes. I bought it a few months ago from Tom Tom audio to replace my isupply. They couldn't tell me when it was last serviced. However I am moving to the US later in the year, so having my equipment voltage changed by AV Options in Austin and will ask them to service my flatcap and Lingo 1 while its in. TomTom audio did say it was working perfectly, but I guess a small service wont do any harm.
My only question is this...if we flow through the flatcap isn't that just adding another box in the way of the signal. Should there be any sonic benefit to doing this.?
Going through the Flatcap allows a better earth arrangement.
Thanks Richard..makes sense.
Tomorrow I get my NAP 200 so looking forward to plugging her in.

Actually, feed the pre amp thru the supercap DIN4 does not work, I have just tried it. The signal has to be from the Stageline DIN4.

If I remember correctly, the Supercap has two power inputs one with audio and one without. Have you checked to see which one you are using? They are labeled I believe. 1) for the power and audio input and 3) for the audio output

There are 4 output DIN4 sockets at the back of the Supercap, I tried all and no sound. Btw, when I connect the supercap to the NAC 252, these DIN4 sockets work, I know it because I used to send audio signal from one of the sockets to a subwoofer, but in this situation it is used to power the Stageline K only as I have a new Supercap to power the preamp.
Peter, you will need to power the Stageline from Socket 1 on the Supercap (the bottom DIN5) as this is the only one to pass signal as well. Then take signal from one of the neighbouring DIN4s, ideally Socket 3.
Thanks Richard. So that is it as I was wondering why it did not work.
Good news. Glad it's all working.
You are the master, Richard. Per your instruction, the Stageline K takes the power from the the socket 1 (DIN5) on the Supercap, and the output to the NAC 252 from socket 3 (DIN4), the music is now more tapping induced, bass is firmer, tighter.
