Moving house - System dilemma

Posted by: Guitarcul on 07 May 2016

Hi all,

For the past 6 years I have been in audio heaven, upgradeitis has gone and I have been happy enjoying my system without a thought of changing anything.  My system is beautifully balanced and would stay with what I have for the foreseeable future except I am moving house.

My current room is around 13ft x 13ft (4m x 4m) and the key for me to great sound was scaling down my speakers to match the size of the room by having a pair of wall mounted Sonus Faber Cremona Auditor Elipsa (stunning sound).

I love these little speakers however I think are going to have to go as the room I am moving to is 17'4" x 12'8" (5.3m x 4m), don't know height of room but it is on the low side.  I don't think the speakers will be big enough for the room and also the room is adjoined to the neighbours garage so am worried once mounted they will transmit to much noise through to their house.

Ideally for any speaker consideration I would like to stay with the amp power I have (122x, 150x with flat cap 2x) but am open to alternative ideas.

Ok so the main options I am considering are:

- keep current speakers and add a sub (could you stand mount my speakers?)

- get the larger standmount version of what I have SF Cremona Auditor M

- play it safe and go for another Sonus Faber as like the sound

- go for a totally different speaker either floor standing or standmount

I listen to a wide range of music rock, indie, jazz, rap, soul, electronic dance music and some classical so I need an all rounder.

I would be buying second hand and would have a budget of around 2k (or under 1k if add a sub to what I have) however this is flexible if you feel there is an option that truly justifies extra spend.

Finally I what to say thanks in advance for all your advice it has been invaluable in the past to getting me to where I am now.

Cheers, Mark.

Speakers are the one thing you can't do anything with until you're in your new room. Speaker/ room interaction is the key.

See how your current speakers sound and go from there.

Cheers Sloop it sounds the most sensible option however....

Trying out speakers in the new room wouldn't be a problem if I had standmounts or floorstanders but not sure the missus would let me drill a load of holes to fix them to the wall to try them out and ruin her new wallpaper unless they were going to stay there.

Standmounts and sub would be a good option as most serious room problems involve bass frequencies and a sub can be used to tune them out by varying sub placement and settings. If you like your current speakers that would be the most cost effective solution and the most likely to preserve the sound you like. I used to have large standmounts but am now very happy with my Naim N-sats and Velodyne sub. They also have a very high WAF.

I would keep the speakers for sure until the move & testing is done.  However I would expect them to be well able to handle the new room size,  its only 33% ('ish) bigger.  I would first look at the power amp,  150 is not exactly a powerhouse & the 122  .....  lets say the world has moved on a bit.  A SN2 would do nicely for power, dynamics & clarity  & the DR'd 200 is a step up from the old 200 which was piles better than the 150    ............  lots to think about,  but if it were me I might be keeping the Cremona Auditor's

I know nothing of these speakers, but Googling reveals a rave review and a 2008 price tag of £2,500. The review mentions that they are really too good for wall mounting and deserve stands. I would get hold of some stands and use them in your new room. I tend to agree with Mike that better amplification is the way to go - you'll be surprised how big small speakers can sound with a bit of power up them.

When it comes to speakers and rooms all bets are off. The only way to plan is to listen to them in the new room. Otherwise it's all guesswork - at this stage.

As per the picture above, the SF Elipsa Auditors have been in my upstairs system for going on 5 years currently driven by a NAC 272 and 250DR combo with SL speaker cables.  The speakers sit on Symposium shelves 4 ft from the floor and 1 ft away from the wall.  This is certainly not optimal particularly when you consider that the ceiling in the room is open and approximately 18 ft tall.  There is nothing about the size, shape, and setup that is logical but the Elipsa Auditors just work.  I have a REL sub in the right hand corner and the sound that comes out of these little speakers is very, very enjoyable.  I have tried several times to "upgrade" the Elipsa's (most recently with the Sopra #1's) but those attempts just reinforce how great the Auditors sound.  Give them a shot in your new room.....you may be surprised.

Great to see someone with the same speakers in a Naim system......so I have a few questions if that's ok

How tricky is it to run a sub with the SF's and is the REL a good match

How big is your room

Do you think the Elipsas would work on stand mounts say 5 ft out from the back wall if I had the sub to give the bass or do you think I need to have them near or mounted to the wall

Seeing your system has definitely made up my mind to try and work with what I have, the elipsas are wonderful speakers so if I can keep them, then great.  Just need to start thinking about subs and possible amp upgrades!

Lots of info on the forum about connecting a sub to Naim gear (https://forums.naimaudio.com/to...onnecting-an-rel-sub).  I use a Britannia B-2 in the family room with the Elipsa Auditors.  My basement system consists of 500/552/NDS/2 X 555 into SF Amati Futuras and a REL Gibraltar sub.  To my ears there is great synergy between Naim, SF, and REL.

As I mentioned earlier, my room is not an optimal layout and has it's challenges.  The ceiling is 18ft and part of an open foyer design that opens to the 2nd floor of the house.  The front wall is 20ft and the listening area (couch) sits back 12 ft from the speakers.  There is knee wall behind the couch that then opens to the kitchen area.  In spite of this the speakers just work.  I don't miss an opportunity to crank up the volume and my wife doesn't miss an opportunity to tell me to turn it down.

My speakers have always been placed on the shelf on that furniture (Wife Factor) so I can't speak to how they sound on standmounts away from the wall.  At one point I actually used the Elipsas with the 500/552/NDS gear and I was amazed at how well they handled the power of the 500 and finesse of the 552.  I also had them mated to a NAP300 with awesome results.

Hope this helps and good luck!!

Before jumping to conclusions, I would suggest you try it out first. The change of room size is there but it's also not ground breaking. So try out first and react if you need to react.
