Sub with NAC 122X and NAP150X

Posted by: Hollow Earth on 09 May 2016

hi there

i'm a contented owner of a NAC 122X and NAP150X from which i run a pair of B&W 704 speakers

however i'm listening to more music on my CD5i and finally buying less records and miss the naturally bassy sound of vinyl and was thinking of augmenting my rig with a subwoofer

i'm looking at the B&W ASW610XP and the cheaper B&W ASW610 to go with my B&W speakers.

does anyone have thoughts, opinions or ideas that i should consider?

thank you.

But he only wanted a better sound from CD,

then maybe I misunderstood the question; sorry if I was unnecessarily repetitive

Hi Anto,

Just shows how different we all are.

Cheers, Chris

yes, this is good otherwise the forum would be boring

yes of course. The best solution is a nap 200, then nac 202. The less expensive is to put cerapucks or cerabases of finite elemente under your spikes ( under your bw 704).

I'm not convinced that following Ant's advice, which just happens to coincide with what you wanted to do in the first place - so it's like pushing at at an open door, is actually the right thing to do; in fact I'd say it's the wrong thing. You'll still have an inadequate CD player and speakers that are too demanding for your amplifier. But if you prefer bass over quality, then it's all good.

no - pushing at an open door would be buying a b&w sub. i listened to anto and bought an rel sub. i checked out the reviews online and they were good.

i have compared the cd's audio to my apogee duet 2's output in the past and there is no discernable diference between the cd and this good dac. therefore i happen to think you are wrong.

Hi Hollow Eath

I would like to thank you for the trust, the Rel, if well integrated into the system will sounds delicious, it will give you composed and depth bass note that no one other box  equipment could get because they simply were not designed for this, improve other aspects in music. Many audiophiles are contrary for add a sub in a music system but I can understand them, they have never tried a good bass system. A recommendation, please use the Rel neutrik cable in Hi Level to the main speaker input (I learned this in Naim forum with the support of Huge)

For any help you need in Rel set up  you can contact me.

regards

do you think the sub will give a bass integrated with all the sound? not apart?  I have not tried it

Posted on: 11 May 2016 by Anto68

Sure

many people look the sub with the home theater, but Rel is different, it sound only when is necessary, it  go deep where the speakers can not reach.

Anyone who thinks of themselves as an audiophile may be more than a little dismayed to see a subwoofer review in these pages, but  there’s a lot to be gained from integrating a subwoofer into a two-channel hi-fi system that stretches beyond the reach of the majority of traditional loudspeakers. HI FI CHoice  Rel's review

I am not as' good at explaining in English

There are many other magazines that deal with this sensitive issue

Since you have bought the T-5 I would just like to chip in and say I used to own two REL T-5s before upgrading them to T-7s (now moved on).  I always wished I'd just kept the T-5s as I found them so much better for music.  Fast and punchy and very easy to integrate into a stereo setup. Keep the gain and crossover just high enough to make a difference and I'm sure you'll be very pleased with the results.

hi anto

all set to plug this in tomorrow. can i simply plug it into one of the "subwoofer" ports on the back of the NAC 122X?

not sure i understand the "high level" - vs "line-level" thing. is high-level plugging it into the NAP 150X? if so i dont see how i would do that (both holes taken)

if hungryhalibut is reading this he might be interested to know i've sold the CD player (and my old apogee DAC) and invested in a prism lyra DAC. i spoke to my dealer and they said that a better CD player would set me back a big chunk of cash.

If you purchased a Rel you'll have a neutrik cable; for the high level you should use this but with Naim amp is a big problem : should isolate one of the three bare wires which will be connected directly to the speakers inputs and not the amplifier output. I have built a cable from my dealer at a cost of 30 Euros and it work fine.

I suggest you read this topic, the latest posts with problem solving about the question Hi level :

interested enough to reply with a "disinterested"  reply it seems

In the early days of CD, a common comment was yes, but where's the bass. It seems that bass was a difficult thing for CD players to do (I've no idea why). I had no interest in CD for that reason until I heard a Cambridge CD2 in about 1990, when there it was, as full and deep as vinyl. Shearne Audio that replaced the Cambridge when it reached end of life was nigh on identical, and then when I changed to streaming first with ND5XS and now MacMini/Audirvana/Hugo nothing lost from the bass whether music ripped from CDs, vinyl or downloaded.

So if the bass is not as good as vinyl it sounds as if the CD player is at fault, and I'd go along with the suggestions of upgrading that - or consider ripping all and going for streaming from a hard disk, which has the potential to achieve better quality for no or not much more cost than a CD player, while opening a new source of music.

If it were simply  the bottom octave or two that you're missing, from both Cd and vinyl, then a Sub could be an option.

That Prism Lyra DAC looks an interesting bit of kit, I'm sure it'll provide a broader bandwidth signal than the somewhat limited although still great in the midband CD5i. Should give that subwoofer some work to do.

the rel sounds fantastic - thank you

very inobtrusive but gives lovely focus to the bottom end
