Problem with newly bought album and NAS

Posted by: MarkiMark on 10 May 2016

So, just downloaded new Radiohead album in 24 bit format. Copied it to NAS box and couldn't find it from Naim app on iPhone. Eventually found it under Artist "Unknown". Used Media Monkey to edit the tracks, adding Artist and Album title. Still can't see it listed under Radiohead. What am I doing wrong?

After editing the Artist and Album tag, it should be visible after the media server has indexed the files again. Which NAS and media server are you using? The Synology media server should automatically reindex the files after touching them. Maybe other servers need to be triggered manually to index the files again?

Also clearing the UPNP-Cache in the naim app could be an idea.

What Gert said. It took me a while to get my head around the reasons for this, so I'll try to explain in the hope it makes sense of why Gert's right.

It's important to remember that what the Naim app sees from the server isn't a real-time list of files and folders, it's a snapshot of the metadata tags of the files at the time they were scanned. Likewise, the Naim app kind of takes its own snapshot and stores it as what it calls the UPnP cache.

These snapshots are updated when the server scans the files on the NAS, and when the user clears the UPnP cache within the Naim app.

So changes to the files on the NAS won't show up in the Naim app until a new snapshot has been taken by the NAS, and in many cases until the Naim app UPnP cache has been cleared. Some server software takes a new snapshot automatically, some doesn't. If the software you use doesn't automatically take an updated snapshot when the files on the NAS change (e.g. the Minimserver software I use doesn't do so, at least not yet), then you have to tell it to rescan the files on the NAS  once you've made changes, in order to update the snapshot it shows to the Naim app to include the new/altered files.

HTH.

Was just about to post my own thread on this so thanks for the explanation ... I had to do more than rescan - reboot the server ... so waiting to see the result

Hopefully you did both Album Artist and (individual track) Artist.

Posted on: 10 May 2016 by MarkiMark

Yes. The individual track artist was already populated. I think the responses I've received confirm my understanding, so hopefully if I restart the NAS box and clear the app cache that should do the job. Thanks to all for your replies.

My Synology + Media Server (DLNA/UPnP) will 99 times out of 100 see the new uploads as it has an auto-index function,  but if it doesn't then I manually (webpage function) re-index & its OK.  If your NAS & media server doesn't have this,  maybe is called rescan & suspect they are the same.   You should not need to restart the NAS, a restart cannot be any sort of acceptable solution for each time a new album is added.    Re clearing cache's,   I clear both UPnP cache & Image cache regularly,  maybe a few times a month,  a good habit to get into.

Should not need to restart the nas itself, or even the server package. Force a rescan by the server and then kill and restart the Naim App.

Which server are you running?

For info - my NAS box is an Iomega home thing. Had it for ages and wouldn't know how to access it or how to ask it to rescan. If a reboot will do the trick I'm happy with that for now. I don't often buy new music now that the majority of what I listen to is direct streamed.

Mike,

Re: Clearing the Cache......I see there is an option via the settings menu in the Naim App, is that how this should be done?  I've never done this before, so probably should give it a try if it's likely to be clogging things up!

Thanks, Jason.

Yes Jason,  both are Naim app cache's.

Settings>Input Settings>UPnP>Clear UPnP Cache  ..............  Settings>Other Settings>Clear Image Cache

The reboot and cache clear did not work for me ...

Perhaps it was because my files were mp4 rather than flac.  Is there a box I should tick to ensure the mp4 files are read?

Posted on: 11 May 2016 by Mike-B

MP4 should play OK on your NDS,  provided your NAS & its UPnP server can read it,  so the question is what is the NAS & server software.      But why MP4 ???  seems odd using a lossy format around these parts.

Posted on: 11 May 2016 by Stephen Pritchard

I agree - the mp4 files were a gift.  My NAS is QNAP 412 using Twonky.  I've tried finding the files with Minim' but same result - nothing ...

Posted on: 11 May 2016 by Dave***t

Mp4 files aren't necessarily lossy - it's just a container which can also hold ALAC data. Also, in some cases .flac files show in Windows with an mp4 icon (happens on my laptop), so confusion can arise.

But either way, yeah, it'd help to know the server software being used.

Mike, MP4 is not a codec - its a container that can carry many formats - both lossy and lossless and video and audio. Both ALAC and AAC can be carried within a MP4 container. Typically MP4 container files for audio will have a .m4a extension and video .mp4 - but this is sort of arbitrary - the container format is the same.

..........   mia culpa,    I asked or phrased the wrong question(s) .    Stephen did not post what his NAS & server software is  or what the MP4 contains,  the real question is why doesn't the MP4 show on the app & play on ND ........  Never played MP4 myself the first thing I would do is convert to my prefered wav,   or flac ........... http://www.zamzar.com/convert/mp4-to-flac/

Now that is an idea ... Mike-B - investigating now

Indeed if the NDS can read a USB with mp4 why cant it read my NAS (QNAP & Twonky and Minim')?

The NDS does not "read" the nas.  The server package running on the nas sends date TO the NDS.  I would look to the server, not the NDS.  And I would delete Twonky, turn off QNAP's own media server package, and install Asset on the QNAP nas.  Between Asset and Minim you have two server packages that DO work.  If something is still amiss, it needs to be trouble-shooted further, ie, do the server packages look to the right folders on the nas for music?

Great, thanks Mike, I reckon there's a lot to be cleared from mine, it's never been done!

Thanks again and apologies to the OP for easing slightly off topic for a moment.

also noticed that if you rip a cd on day of release the  system sometimes cant find the meta date , a few days later it is fine
