Apheta died...

Posted by: Adam Zielinski on 11 May 2016

My Apheta (factory fitted to Rega RP10) suddenly decided I no longer need both channels in stereo. So started serving only a left channel.... I know from George's posts MONO is a way to go, but felt this was a bit extreme.

Rega service came in yesterday - diagnosis - Apheta cartridge decided to call it a day, after less than 1 month of not so intensive use. As you can imgagine not very impressed. Whilst REGA decides what to do - they left me with some sort of blue appendage stuck to my RP10 - I can play my vinyls, but it's not very pleasant.

So back to my trusted NDX....

Should have got yourself a NDS instead of one those weird, old-fashioned, rotating things that spins a black plastic disc I believe. Very strange behaviour.

(Only kidding, I used to own a LP12).

Seriously, I hope Rega sort this out soon for you.

Apheta 2? If so guessing it's covered under warranty. If not, i bet they'll still sort something out for you. Apheta mk1 still going strong here at the mo.

I know, famous last words...

Kind of reflects my experience with Rega products of late.

And presumably while you decide what is the best outcome for you...

Sorry to read of your misfortune btw.

Thanks Nigel I actually have two of those strange things at home.... one with each system....

NDS is inevitable anyhow. Waiting for a good offer now.

Indeed - I told them I want an upgrade, as a compensation for the moral losses suffered ))

An upgrade. So they offered you what? An Apheta that consistently plays both channels for more than a month .

Now, that's a thought

As you we all know, no matter how hard you try to ensure that nothing goes wrong, things still go wrong.  Cartridges are subject to enormous forces and have to be so robust, yet also so small, light and delicate - have you ever seen the wire inside an MC cartridge?  It's much thinner than a hair.  Anyway, I feel for you here.  Such a failure is annoying.

But  the test is that when something does go wrong, how your dealer (and manufacturer) get things sorted for you.  It would appear that your dealer has given you a cartridge to at least ensure that you can still spin LPs while your Apheta is being looked at and either repaired or replaced. The temporary replacement may not be sound like an Apheta, but it does sound like good service.

Thank your for this gentle moderation Richard You are of course very right.

The service, so far, has been fantastic. I emailed my dealer on Sunday and spoke to him the same day.
On Monday a suitable time for a home visit was arranged (Tuesday afternoon). On a scheduled hour, my dealer, togher with a Rega specialist turned up to diagnose the problem. Faulty cartridge. A temporary MM cartridge was fitted, so I could still play some music.
That is rather special I must say and a commendation to Rega is due.

There is only one other company that I can think of that handles problems when they occur in the same fashion - Naim, and specifically their Polish distributor.

So all in all - when things go wrong, they are of course annoying and frustrating. But their handling is exemplary.

Don't want to break any forum rules, so lets just say my experience with Rega products haven't been the best.

I wonder if that's why i've ended up with a mix of Rega & Naim in my system?
