Laptop to Naim Qb connection problem

Posted by: Colin Stump on 13 May 2016

Hi

A mate has just bought a Qb on my recommendation and has satisfactorily set it up to run based on his Samsung mobile. He also wants to be able to control it from his laptop, which runs Windows 10. He has reasonable broadband/wifi connectivity in his house but no wired network.

We attempted to install the Qb as a 'new device' on the laptop from 'Settings'. Initially it detected the Qb as a Bluetooth connected headphone and we managed to play a track from Tidal into the Qb. Then, in 'Devices' the Qb player proper appeared but we could find no means of getting the laptop to stream music to this device.

We uninstalled both devices and on re-installing could only then detect the Bluetooth Qb 'headphone' but the music now refuses to stream to this device.

So, round and round in circles we went and then I remembered how useful this forum is!

Any help greatly appreciated!

Well, you need to decide HOW you want to "get" the music from the laptop to the Qb.  What has worked for you is a bluetooth connection; that certainly is one option.  You use whatever music player you want, and let the laptop send the output, via bluetooth, to the Qb -- Just as if the Qb was a bluetooth speaker or headphones.  This seems a viable option.

If you want to use the laptop and Qb as a server and streamer/player, respectively, you may have more difficulty.  First, you'll need to run a music (media) server on the laptop.  There is one built into Windows 10, or you can download one (eg Asset).  If you want to play with the Windows media server, you might find an article on howtogeek.com useful "How to turn your computer into a DLNA media server."  But for this to work reliably, you'll need a reliable network connection.  Home wifi may not work out for you (you may get dropouts) but it's worth a try.

Don't think you can use the laptop to control the Qb - that can only be done from the app running on a smartphone or tablet.

The laptop can be used as a source of music as Bart describes above.

The only app for PC/Mac is an nServe app - this one is used to manage Naim servers like HDX and UnitiServe.

Streamers (e.g Muso) are controlled via apps on either iOs or Android tablets / smartphones. A wireless network is needed. Music is best streamed from either NAS or networked PCs with a UPnP server software.

Thanks everyone for your help.

He'll be using his mobile then!

Bluetooth from the mobile should be no better, or worse, than bluetooth from the laptop.
