NDX - NaimApp /MinimServer - Nearly giving up !?

Posted by: al9315 on 13 May 2016

I thought I had it all working - been OK for a few days (I think) - Sat down tonight to listen to some music - mistake

3 hours later - tearing my hair out :-

1)

I created a Playlist "Tunes" - Tablet / NaimApp / selected 6000 items (tracks) - found one I liked - touched screen - started to play - touched 3 dots top right to    select playlist and add track - track added THEN - Playlist full. Only way to continue - delete playlist - start again.......... I cannot manage to add tunes to create a playlist ?

2)

One of the 1st row of tracks to appear is 'Cello Song - when I touch it a Johnny Cash track appears. If I scroll the screen down and back to the top the first tracks are A..... and the one touched previously is the Johnny Cash one with the correct picture of the Johnny Cash disc cover

I went into database and changed name of 'Cello Song to Cello Song - switched off tablet - re-scanned MinimServer - switched on tablet and loaded NaimApp - cleared caches - but still 'Cello Song ???

There is another example - a track on a Kenny Wheeler disc called " Unti" - it appears now as [untitled] - so I did the same process as above - renamed it " Unti ( without the "") re-started everything but still[untitled]

WHERE is this info coming from ?? - I can see it clearly on screen as Unti ???

I do not mind manually amending errors - but do not wish to have to dig out all the disc again

Help most welcome !!!

let's check the obvious first-

Are you changing the file name or using something like MP3tag to change the metadata?

In answer to your first query: if you tap the ... top right, you're selecting the whole 6000 track list. To select an individual track, just tap ... next to that track to add it to the play queue.

The reason you got the 'playlist full' message is that you can't add more than 500 tracks to a play queue or playlist, and you had inadvertently tried to add 6000. Incidentally, if you want to add more than 500 tracks, you can if you use the remote, not the app, but I suspect you aren't trying to do this?

Can't help with your other query, I'm afraid, as I don't use Minim.

I can't understand why anyone would want a playlist of 6000 tracks, or even 500 come to that. I can understand 50 to so for 'dinner party' or 'housework' but 6000?

Metadata is all in this streaming game: get it right and everything is lovely, get it wrong and a world of pain awaits. You change track titles, genres etc by going into the tracks themselves. Changing file names in windows explorer will do nothing.

Thanks for replying:

Sloop JohnB - QNap - Filestation, scrolled down to appropriate disc and changed (Rename) track filename

Chrissu - I understand why the playlist got filled re: 500 limit - I do not understand :-

Can I not opt for selecting the "all tracks" rather than the Albums ?

Selecting "Albums" - I touch the Album icon and touch the 3 dots on the right to choose a track - sometimes it selects the total No. of tracks on the disc, other times it pops up the option to "Add track to Playlist"

Selecting "6000 Items" i.e. all tracks - on touching an icon - is there no way to add the track to the playlist ?

I also thought that if I e.g. Touched track "Round Midnight" it gets added then played, and on touching another one, it is added and played next in the queue ? - It just replaces the one which is playing and starts playing it

Hope above makes sense ???

Hi Hungry - I do NOT want a 6000 playlist - I wish to scroll through it and add tracks to a playlist !

I would be grateful if you would explain "You change the track titles, genres......."

I am (not obvious) quite PC literate, and I did suspect just changing track name was perhaps not wise, are you saying I have to redo the disc using dbPoweramp or can I change the track name any way without digging out the discs again ?

Thanks very much

Al

You are getting in a muddle here. Forget playlists. Just play an album. If you want to add something to the end of the queue, just find the album and select queue next or queue last. A playlist is designed to be saved so you can play the same list again later.

If you want to change metadata, install dbpoweramp on your computer, go into the album via Windows explorer (don't worry about QNAP file station) right click on the track and edit the meta. You don't need to re-rip anything.

So you have to select playlist tracks from the "Album" section ? - cannot select them from the "total Tracks" section ? - Just that I wish to make a compilation for a party - say 100 tracks - easier to pick ones I like seeing track names as I scroll though - rather than have to open albums and select that way

I have copied all my CDs using dbPoweramp and stored them away in the loft

I don't quite understand - is there a way to alter metadata without re-doing CD ?

Obviously changing it on the QNap Filestation (even though it appears changed) - just does not work ? - I am beginning to feel a bit dim!

If you haven't already done so, you should enable "tap for options" settings on the naim app. This will give you more control over what action the app will take when you select a track or album on the app.

To enable this tap on the gearwheel symbol in the top right corner of the main app screen and select Other Settings and enable the "tap for options" setting.

No it's only 18:48 here in the States (east coast).  I'm here all night ;-)

A "playlist" is only used if you want to save a particular list of individual tracks for use over and over.  If you simply want to play a track, or album, merely select it and play it.  I think you might have thought that you NEED to use the playlist feature, when you don't.

Thanks for the tip SJBabbey !!

Bart - I do just wish a playlist for a party - the point is really that it would be easier to scroll through hundreds of track and pluck out recognised ones I like - rather than have to open Album then select a track !

Thanks for help !

AL9315 .. you do have the ability through the NAIM app to turn on "Tracks" such that all tracks are displayed.   It's done via the gear wheel in the top right hand corner of the screen .. I must admit to not being able to accurately guide you any further than that though ...

To surf through all your tracks you only have to choose "items" on the root-folder from your minimserver. Then you can build up a playlist. But if you use minimserver and the paylist-option from the naim-app there is a problem. If you change your libory and rescan it by the minimserver all playlists will be broken. So if you prepare one for your party don't do a rescan. Or you have to build it with another software like vlc and safe it in a folder which is scaned by the minimserver.

^^ Now that sounds like a world of pain. It's so easy on the UnitiServe.

AL9315

Is everything working OK now? Need any more help?

With regards to playlists in the Naim app - you can edit them, delete, etc...
