From 122x/150x to Supernait 2
Posted by: ink04 on 14 May 2016
Would upgrading to a Supernait 2 from a 122x/150x be a considerable upgrade. There is a huge difference in price so I would expect it to provide a significant benefits. It would be ideal to be able to hear one in my system at some point but before then I thought I would ask the forum first.
The power rating is higher in the SN2 than my current set up but would upgrading to an SN2 be worthwhile and in what areas would I see the benefits.
I have a flatcap and use a CD5x and an LP12.
The 122x/150x is considered old model when compared the XS series. Hence the low resale price.
In any case, they served you well. And I expect you to enjoy the simplicity and sound of the newer SN2. There really isn't much weaknesses in the new SN2 that you can find. The next step up is at least 2x more expensive. (282/250DR).
up to you if really must scratch that itch
Yesterday I hooked up my DAC V1 to a NAP 100, and with easy to drive speakers, it is one hell of a naim system, superb and rhythmic, I totally enjoyed it, and it can easily challenge the bigger Naim rigs (but then those systems like SN2 and , 202/200 and 282/250DR can drive much more demanding speakers).
Personally I wouldn't do it, but it is your money.

Hm, I had a Nap100 and it was a good amp and excellent value for money but imho in no way can it challenge the larger Naim rigs, if it could I would still own it now and not an SN2. Even with my old little Guru Juniors the SN2, and a 202/200 was hugely better.
Yes I do hear the obvious improvements from Nap 100 to 200 to 250DR, but as a package the DAC V1/100 sounded very musical and "naim like" to me.
they obviously were designed with each other and as a synergy they just sound right to me

Bravo! I'm taking this as an implicit endorsement of the idea of Credos or Arivas with the existing electronics.
But OP wants a SN2 so what can anyone do?!!
C.
I would totally endorse credos or arrives with the existing electronics and sell the pro acs.
But his money.
Firstly, if you never added a flatcap to the 122/150, you missed a trick for a relatively small outlay(2nd hand).
My intro to Naim was122/150 and later added a FC. I was for most part quite happy with it, a PL on the FC improved things further.
Having bought a HDX, I wondered if the HDX was being bottle necked by the entry level pre/power and sold them for a used SN1.
I was a little disappointed at first and missed the 122/150/FC, and it was only after adding HCdr to the SN that did I notice an immediate improvement, the HC is crutial to the old SN.
After much pondering on the SN and having 2 rows of buttons and a DAC I would probably never use, went to 202/200/Napsc and kept the HC. A 4 box amp, I missed the excitement and the ability that I felt the SN had over all music genres, 202/200 felt a little laid back.
jumped to SN2 and very satisfied all round. Kept the HCdr too. I'm quite sure the the new SN is not so dependable on the HC and could possibly live without it.
SN is fabulous compared to the former set ups and I'm sure many will stop there and live happily ever afterwards. It does everything well and will destroy the 122/150 hands down.
fair enough, if one has the cash better to go for SN2.
it is all about the cash, the Naim upgrade path. If funds allow, then why stop at SN2, go for 272/250DR or NDX/282/HCDR/250DR.

Yes you would, and then you would again.
Any news, Ink?

You have a lovely system, a tad more 'analogue' sounding than most other combinations. If you plan to change it, I have a suspicion you haven't enjoyed it fully yet.
Best

Just silence, or inky blackness.
A separate combo makes sense if your target is a top pre/power amplifier (252 and above)
If your final target is 282 you should buy SN2.
Regards.

Might have been nice for those who've contributed though. Or even for those who come afterwards and who use this forum for info. C.

I indicated in earlier reply my intentions are yo hear an SN2, I would like to hear it in my system at home and intend doing so. I have an excellent hifi dealer that supports me with home demonstrations which I think is the only way to get a true perspective on what a component may add to the system.
In the meantime though, I have had fun with altering placement and furniture also. Quite simply replacing my armchair with one much lower has yielded some benefits
Fortunately I have enough room to try different configurations it's something that I do from time to time to try and get the best I can from my system. Not always successful but certainly a beneficial experience. Not the room is large by any means but it is a room where I dedicate yo music .
The SN2 for me would be a substantial investment into my system, I will also look at other manufacturers with cheaper alternatives but risk affecting the balance on my system. Time will tell I guess but it will be fun trying.
Thanks Ink.

If I were you I'd buy an Hicap to enjoy what you already have.
