Issues with replacement preamp

Hi all,

I have owned Naim equipment since 1991 and have finally decided to take the plunge with their streaming equipment and upgrade. I have just replaced my nac 72 with a nac n272. I have kept my trusty nap 180 for the time being as well as my cdi. Having set up the system yesterday, I now have a couple of problems:

  1. Sound is not coming out of the right speaker; it was yesterday but I have reconnected the SNAIC today whilst trying to add the AV in functionality and it now seems to come out of one speaker only
  2. I have been trying to connect my Pioneer sc lx 71 AV amp using its pre out function to get the front speaker output from the AV amp through my Naim system. I have connected it using analogue interconnects but, so far, I can't seem to get the sound to come through

Looking at the SNAIC, the wiring seems to be loose  at one end, so I guess this could be the reason for only one channel (the wire is > 20 years old), As for the AV input, I think Ive followed both instruction manuals slavishly but, after checking this three times, I still can't get it to work.

I'm afraid I'm really not very technically minded; does anyone have any bright ideas?

Many thanks

Before you go any further, if your old SNAIC is looking ropey then switch off and remove it - when connected to a NAP180 the SNAIC carries DC power (not needed by the NAC-N272, but it's still there) so if your SNAIC is faulty, or coming apart then for safety sake remove it and either get your Naim dealer to repair or replace it.  More than likely this may be the cause of channel loss.  Hopefully it's just a SNAIC issue, but if the DC power missed with a signal cable it could cause damage and maybe knock out a channel.

Frankly I'm surprised that your dealer didn't notice this problem when they installed the new NAC-N272. I think you had better have a word...

Thanks for your answer. I'm afraid this lies with me, not the dealer, as I picked up the preamp as an ex demo return from them and connected it myself; having lived abroad for nearly 10 years in the past, I have rebuilt my system many times before, so I assumed that I'd be able to do so this time

I've ordered a new SNAIC so we'll see, but can you explain what you mean by "missing with a signal cable"?

Many thanks

Sorry, a spell check error.  I meant "messed"....
